Yesterday my parish bulletin (TLM) said that next Thursday, June 23 will be Corpus Christi and that Sunday, June 26, will be “The External Solemnity of Corpus Christi.”

Does this mean that next Sunday’s propers will be from Corpus Christi and not from the Second Sunday after Pentecost? I know that there is some kind of procession after Mass that day. Could it be that?

Corpus Christi is celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, which is an homage to Maundy Thursday, when Christ instituted the Mass. However, in countries where it is not a Holy Day of Obligation (such as the US), it is translated to the Second Sunday after Pentecost (thus replacing the usual Mass for the Second Sunday after Pentecost).

I am not a priest and I don’t remember from last year but I think that means the Mass of Corpus Christi will be celebrated both on Thursday and on the following Sunday with the Eucharistic Procession, if there is one, celebrated on Sunday.

Thanks! 👍

In the new calender, the Feast of Corpus Christi is transferred to the following Sunday, which is why I like to follow the FSSP, because they will have Mass this Thursday with a procession. (they follow the older calender)

My parish is FSSP too, and they follow the old calendar (except for this, ‘external solemnity’ thing apparently).

Oh okay, our Eucharistic Procession is on Sunday (The External Solemnity of Corpus Christi), but I guess some places are having it on Thursday.

It was Pope Leo XIII who permitted the Procession to be held on Sunday in the US. So it’s been a few years, it’s not a new calendar thing.

An external solemnity means that a certain number of Masses (usually 1, and not more than 2) will be celebrated using the Propers of the feast instead of the liturgical day. However, in the Divine Office the liturgical day is observed - unless it is a case of the Divine Office celebrated solemnly with the people - for example, Solemn Vespers.

The difference with the calendar of 1970 is that in the calendar of 1970 the actual feast is moved. For the “external solemnity” the actual feast day remains as it is - so for example, in this case, on Thursday, the Mass and Divine Office will be of Corpus Christi. However, on Sunday, it is like granting permission for a special Votive Mass to replace the Mass of the Sunday.
