Well, Extraordinary Form Masses (i.e. the TLMs) are very rare in my home country, Indonesia. Here is one of them youtube.com/watch?v=UgwDaRvu8pI&feature=youtu.be in which the priest does not wear a biretta. Is the use of biretta a must in a TLM? We have to keep learning more and more about TLM to be able to get used to it. 😃

I think a whether or not a Biretta is worn is a regional thing. It is probably optional at any rate, though it’s certainly not a bad idea for the priest to wear one. Thanks for the link… beautiful church, nice singing, and good Latin pronunciation! Truly the Universal Mass. Perhaps an “Asperges Me” can be added before Mass? Soon it will be time to sing “Vidi Aquam.” Only other thing is hearing the priest say “Introibo ad altare Dei” and the Confiteor during the singing at the beginning is little distracting. I think his microphone should be off at certain times.

I don’t think its a big deal, but I’m wondering what kind of reaction we’ll see from hard line traditionalists…I thought their whole thing about the EF is it’s universality, and unchanging consistency…But, again, its probably not a big deal.

The biretta is an academic dress item and has different variations to indicate various orders etc. I know of one priest who felt he could not wear a biretta as he had not completed any academic courses. As mentioned previously it could also be a regional choice, or it may even be some priests just don’t like wearing hats.

Sorry, without the biretta, the Mass is invalid and those attending it do not fulfill their obligation.

:p:p:p
The history of not wearing a biretta can be traced as far back as Martin Luther.

That’s the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

Hello,

The biretta is indeed part of the rubrics in the 1962 Missal. So, it should be used. That being said, I think it is only addressed in the entrance and recession of the priest…technically before and after Mass. Others might correct me on that.

Would have been the best answer, had this been 1962!

But seriously, in the rubrics? Aren’t the rubrics part of the General Instructions. I’m not sure rubrics include how the priest or participants are to be dressed.

Apparently the rubrics do mention the biretta.

Ironically, the copyright to the text above is held by Biretta Books. 😃 You can’t make this stuff up.

It just keeps getting better and better…kinda like last night’s Super Bowl!

The rubrics of the 1962 Missal are in force while celebrating Mass in the Extraordinary Form. This is made clear in motu proprio Summorum Pontificum.

The biretta ought to be used, because it a head covering is expected. Some religious orders do not use the biretta (instead using a folded mice, a monastic cowl, or a capuche).

A legitimate reason for not using the biretta does exist though, and is prevalent today: the celebrant not owning one. Very few priests have birette, and they can be expensive and hard to find. If Father hasn’t purchased one yet, it’s okay for him to celebrate Mass without one.

That, I’d love to see.

Poor ones, presumably.

Haha, “amice” I mean. My computer doesn’t seem to like liturgical language.
