Extraordinary Form

This Sunday, the parish I attend offered a Mass in the extraordinary form. Although it was a Low Mass, it nevertheless was a memorable experience and with the impressive attendance we received, I hope it will be regularly offered in the future. Thus, in this post, I wanted to share my experience with the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.

It is interesting that you mentioned the ecclessia dei red missal since I have owned one for quite sometime now, and hopefully I will be able to use it more often in the future. Moreover, I also own a St. Joseph’s Daily Missal from 1959, which contains an assortment of helpful prays, among other things.

Congrats on your EF Mass experience. I can hardly wait for next Sunday. At Holy Rosary in Portland Oregon, there will be a Pontifcal Solemn High Mass, Bishop Basil Meeking from New Zealand will be celebrating. Cantores in Ecclesia will sing from Byrd’s compositions.

There seems to be conflicting reports that in the evening over at st. Stephen’s there will be sung Vespers or Compline. I’ve gotten info for both at the same time and place. So we’ll see.

Going to be another wonderful Assumption weekend.

I read about the upcoming Pontifical Solemn High Mass at Holy Rosary and although I could certainly drive up to PDX from Eugene, I decided to stay down here on the 15th of August, albeit that could change. Nevertheless, it would be quite a Mass to attend and one I will strive to be at in the future, if another one occurs. Also, have the renovations at Holy Rosay been completed?

Regarding St. Stephen’s, I have not been to that particular parish in WA, yet it is one I will strive to visit in the future, not only attending Mass but to marvel at the traditional church architecture that more or less varies in the State of Oregon. The St. Stephen’s I had reference to is in SE Portland. Cantores in Ecclesia makes their home there. The retired director, Dean Applegate, claims the accoustics are better than Holy Rosary but I don’t agree. But perhaps its just that I like the church better. At least the tabernacle is centered on the back Altar. Plus HR has a communion rail. Just a better setting for the 1962 form.

My mistake. I must have inadvertently thought of another parish than St. Stephen’s in SE Portland. Also, the action of “hiding” the tabernacle in a parish seems to have been a hasty decision without much thought. At least, the parish I attend has the tabernacle on the old high altar still located within the sanctuary, yet not in its original location. Also, the tumultuous period following Vatican II has resulted in many haphazard decisions regarding the sanctuary of Catholic churches in the U.S.

The Low Mass has a certain noble simplicity.
In our archdiocese, a priest from the FSSP travels a few times a month to other parishes (of the Novus Ordo variety) on Sundays to offer the Old Rite, so I ask for prayers that more people will start to attend them.

Quite true. To receive during Holy Communion at the former location of our altar rail is an integral part of the Extraordinary Form that I hope to see reappear in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, among other things.
