i would like to know if any catholic readers of this post can help me find any sources which discuss the catholic evidence for a purgatory. i have read a small piece of literature online regarding the matter, and i was just wondering if, at any time in the catholic church’s history, catholics who have heard the voice of god, such as popes, saints, holy members of the clergy of any sort, etc, have offered evidence for inspired revelation re this matter. thanks.

“Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints - F.X. Shouppe” - is one of the best books I have read with stories from the saints and Catholics who have came back from purgatory to ask for prayers etc. This is not meant to be from authoritative sources - ie. Popes etc and it will not convince the unbeliever but it makes interesting and thought proving reading for any Catholic.

The Church father and saints prayed for the dead - St Augustine prayed for his mother. If there was just Heaven and Hell, then prayers would be useless/unecessary.

Also, many of the saints saw visions of purgatory.

A book I read recently which was persuasive (and a bit unsettling for this Lutheran) was “Hungry Souls.” Here’s the link at amazon:

amazon.com/Hungry-Souls-Supernatural-Messages-Purgatory/dp/0895558998/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295014325&sr=8-1

Peace be with you.

“Charity for the Suffering Souls” by Rev. John A. Nageleisen has a very good explanation of the Church’s Doctrine of Purgatory. It’s from Tan Books.

In my experience, I read into or understand of Purgatory by reading 1 Cor 3, mainly verses up to 15
