Hello. I’m only 27, but it seems that i’m progressively becoming less and less fun. This post is my latest attempt to find a philosophical basis for proving something “fun” to be sinful, so here goes.
Extreme sports often endanger the lives of the participants. Lately in the news there are stories about mountain climbers dying because they risked their lives for fun. A man died by bungee jumping off a hotel because he forgot they didn’t have a 13th floor, so he used too much cord.
I’m wondering if this isn’t often sinful. Now, i don’t think people would actually start up a mountain if they knew they would die, but they often know it’s a possibility and do it anyway. I mean, who goes up mountains in December? Don’t tell me we risk our lives when we step out of the house. I know there’s always a chance i might die crossing a street, but there’s an even greater chance i’ll starve to death if i don’t go to the grocery store.
When the only advantage to risking your life is that you will get a “thrill”, is it a sin? I know there has to be sufficient reflection, etc., but any thoughts?
