Extremely Conservative Dress

Among the confusion about what is or is not appropriate to wear (For every day and for church) I have fallen in love with contemporary muslim clothing. Out of respect I do not cover my hair. But I love how their clothes are beautiful without showing off my bare skin. I especially love their jeans as they are loose and flowy like a long skirt.
Has anyone else gone to such extremes to stay unquestionably modest?
 
Well, I’ve stopped wearing my Speedos in crowded shopping malls.

The CCC states that standards for modesty can be set as by regional standards. But then again, I think wearing that type of dress in the US makes a different statement that you may not be wanting to make.

As long as you can look in the mirror and know that what you have on is not meant to entice then I say that you did your job. Wearing clothes from the Muslim traditions only states that before them Christians had no way of dressing modestly. You could just as easily wear a nun’s habit. But I think that unless we are expressing a religious lifestyle we should stick with the modest clothing that is available for anyone who chooses that type of clothing. And remember that it is not just the clothing that entices since Muslims do have wives and there must be an attraction somewhere…teachccd

I agree with you, I am nearly jealous of muslim women’s way of dress. I would even like to wear a head covering…
 
A lady, yes, a real lady, entered the church last evening with her children for confessions.
She was wearing a simple almost ankle length light blue dress. I reminded me of the very modest dresses worn by the “plain people” in farming communities of central Kansas.

How do you know that your money is not being spent to promote activities that are counter to Christian ideals. I know when I was over there kids would sell us things that were seemingly innocent such as clothing, artwork, weapons(that had been abandoned), old currency, etc. We then found out that their parents were using the American currency to buy weapons and IED parts to kill us. Check out where you buy these things from very carefully.

I am a man and I wish U.S. women wore clothing of this sort. Everyone would be better off. Women would be better off if they sought to gain men’s attention by their inner virtues.

I’m not necessarily down with the burqa thing, but I’d like to see much more modest in dress all around. Maybe we could start in church. Even at Holy Mass, there are a lot of women displaying the goods way too prominently.

Sometimes I feel like I accidentally walked into a Britney Spears video.
 
If a lady is interested in modest clothing, here is a site to look at. I think I read about the founder of this business some time ago… She resented the fact that mall stores were selling clothes that she wouldn’t get caught dead in…

I dress extremely conservatively. I also cover my head, but I do it in a way that doesn,t make people look twice and I don’t think I resemble a muslim. I make sure I have a longer blouse on if I am wearing jeans. No exposed bust line, although my crucifix necklace is visable. I follow St Pauls letter to the Corinthians v 11 literally and because I seem to be in prayer a lot throughout the day, my head stays covered with a plain triangle scarf. No big deal. I also wear longer skirts and dresses. It makes me feel humble, and I feel confident that I will not offend anyone or cause lustful thoughts.👍

St. Paul wanted women to cover their heads out of respect for the “angels.” Seraphim cover their faces with their wings out of respect for God. Perhaps these Seraphim are in every Catholic Church adoring Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and this is why St. Paul wanted women to cover their heads.

1 Corinthians 11:10 “Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels.”

These are the highest order or choir of angels. They are the angels who are attendants or guardians before God’s throne. They praise God, calling, “Holy Holy Holy is the Lord of Hosts”. the only Bible reference is Isaiah 6:1-7. One of them touched Isaiah’s lips with a live coal from the altar, cleansing him from sin. If women wear hats or head coverings today in a Novus Ordo Mass, then they seem to attract attention to themselves. This is how my mother felt, so she stopped wearing head coverings to Mass.

I asked a priest about this and he said that hats are no longer required by Canon Law. He said that women’s head coverings became elaborate status symbols in the West instead of remaining as modest garments to show submission to God.

I dress in a way that most would describe as extremely conservative. I also cover my hair.

My usual “uniform” is an ankle length skirt, a generously cut hip-length tunic over the top, opaque, knee-length stockings, sensible shoes and a plain, triangle head scarf tied at the nape of my neck.

I also avoid all ornamentation and jewellery (including wedding rings) as I feel strongly about the message of 1 Peter 3:3… plus I only use unpatterned, black cloth for making all my clothes. The latter is more of a personal preference than something I feel has particular religious significance, though I do feel black to be a good, sober colour.

I do not expect everyone to dress in precisely the way I do! What I chose to wear is born out of a strong, personal conviction, but I would be gratified to see more modesty and plainness in attire amongst all professing Christians. Taking all our clothing cues from the world has resulted in much unseemlyness.

Thanks for that site. Love the skirt in the main photo - I will have to see if they ship to UK. I do not agree with Muslim dressing. You can dress modestly with wearing a big black ugly sack outfit. I agree with the above poster - be very careful who you are giving money to. Read the links on my footer and learn about Islam before you think it is a wonderful religion. They are totally against everything regarding Christianity.
 
Modesty is a lost virtue in America. The issue for me is, how do I dress in a manner that doesn’t give people the wrong idea about me? I am not Amish, Muslim, etc. These are cultures that do promote modesty, but they are not Catholic cultures. (I am new to the faith, after a lifetime of devout Protestantism.) Many years back, when my girls were small, I came up with three rules for our wardrobes:
  1. Be modest.
  2. Be feminine.
  3. Be yourself.
My ten year old and I recently had a conversation about this and being “moderate” in this issue of dress. I drew a little road with a ditch on either side. On one side I “drew” a burkha (sp.?), on the other side I drew a bikini. These are opposites. One says, “Cover it up, hide it all” and the other side says, “Show it off, bare it all.” I told her that the 3 rules above will keep her in the middle of the road. 🙂

Just my two cents.

For those looking for ideas with regard to modest dress, modestclothes.com/ is a good place to start. It’s a directory of clothes for those of many religious persuasions and is all neatly categorised according to creed and region.
