How do you know that your money is not being spent to promote activities that are counter to Christian ideals. I know when I was over there kids would sell us things that were seemingly innocent such as clothing, artwork, weapons(that had been abandoned), old currency, etc. We then found out that their parents were using the American currency to buy weapons and IED parts to kill us. Check out where you buy these things from very carefully.

God bless,
you should check out the living conditions that we are imposing on the people of indonesia who produce our GAP, Levis, and Old Navy clothing, to name a few. The poor standard of living for those sweatshop employees is every bit as tragic as someone funding terrorist activities… while innocent american shoppers line the pockets of the international corporations at the expense of the poor!

the solution?

make your own clothes!

I like that solution, however what pattern company has patterns for modest clothing (that aren’t a burka or a bikini)? Also, making your own clothing has become much more expensive than shopping at discount stores - and in this economy, even if you have it to spend there are so many really wonderful Catholic charities that really need that money.

It is certainly possible to find modest patterns… we know many Baptist families that make all the ladies’ clothes and they have lots of patterns, some from specialty places that serve conservative Christians, and others from Simplicity, etc. Doing a Google search would probably find these sources easily.

That said, it is true that it can become very pricey to make your own clothes, not to mention time consuming. I am also not the most talented seamstress and end up frustrated and feeling rather “unChristian” in my efforts.😉

There are clothes out there that definitely fit between the burkhas and the bikinis. You can find all kinds of stuff at the thrift stores for cheap. We go to the St. Vincent de Paul store about once a month and spend a long while looking for stuff for all 8 of us. My husband teaches seminars and has to wear nice suits and he’s found most of them at the thrift store. We don’t feel bad about where our money’s going, we get a good deal and we get a wider selection of styles. I know some people don’t like the second hand clothes, but you can’t get a better deal.

The internet is also useful. Last week I Googled “denim skirts” and after sifting through the 70 and 80 dollar ones (that were gorgeous by the way!) I found some for under $8 in my daughter’s size. I think I ended up looking through Bizrate for the cheapest prices.

Have a great day!

I find that some of the most modest patterns are the easiest to sew. Cute jumpers and once you find a good skirt pattern 👍

But you are right, you can end up spending more on fabric than just purchasing at discount store …

I am curious - this question goes out to everyone - someone mentioned checking out a place that sales muslim type clothing to make sure it doesn’t support terrorism … how does one do that? Really? I don’t think things like that would be plastered on the internet, etc … so 🤷

Interesting thread.

Many Quaker women have “returned” to their plain clothes. As a rule of thumb Friends seek to dress neither too “plain” nor too “opulent”…Friends seek to draw no attention to themselves by their clothes. If one were to look at a crowd of people, one would not be able to pick the Quaker out of the crowd.

At one time, Friends had a “dress code”…but the “plain clothing” became a source of pride instead of modesty. Over the years Friends have tried to keep ourselves “plain” without becoming so “austere” that we stand out. We seek to dress in plain clothes…simple colors with modest designs that would befit people of faith.

It is hard to say for sure however corporate papers are public information. So if the corporation selling it wants to deal in American currency yet there is no paperwork supporting corporate paperwork in the states or an import/export license chances are they are not legit. That would be a for starters. Also most sites if you dig and just simply put the name of the company or company president on a search engine such as google you can find a whole lot really quickly. There is almost always a paper trail. You just have to be willing to do the work.

God bless,

Although a bit off topic I wanted to mention this about Islamic clothing. There is more to Islamic clothing than just modesty. You can be modest without wearing a sack. Here is one story of an apostate:

“Yesterday my wife went to work (she’s an accountant) without her hijab. She said she was able to see the world from a different perspective. She says that hijab was more than just a veil; it was a kind of a wall that protected her from this beautiful world and made her ignorant and narrow-minded. We didn’t go to mosque last Friday and I don’t know what our Imam is thinking.”

We now have 5 ex-muslim families in our Church and the biggest change for them was dressing like everyone else. Modest dressing and Islamic dressing are in no way the same. :signofcross:

Hum …I know that corporation articles are public, however,I do not believe that it would be as easy as googling the company and the president. I just did myself and my three companies and nothing came up but my home web page aka what I am selling. You may have to physically go somewhere to pull the paperwork. And I don’t think you can find export documents on line … I don’t think it’s possible to figure this out unless you are involved with the FBI or have many different facets of resources that everyday people do not have.

Articles of Incorporation are kept can be found through each state’s dept of rev site. You are right about the googling with the normal everyday average person. However, when you have someone that is involved in political or even charitable activities you may find their name in articles from those charity events. Such as someone involved in breast cancer research may be found on google several times as here is so and so at Race For a Cure and then their business, etc. It all depends. It also depends on how deeply one wants to look.

And who weaves the fabric?

Who manufactures the sewing machines?

I’m not necessarily down with the burqa thing, but I’d like to see much more modest in dress all around. Maybe we could start in church. Even at Holy Mass, there are a lot of women displaying the goods way too prominently.

Sometimes I feel like I accidentally walked into a Britney Spears video.
I agree that we need to a greater commitment to modesty, but my biggest concern with Muslim dress are some of the beliefs that come with the reasons why they dress that way. It seems as if the female body in Muslim culture (at least in the more extreme communities) is viewed as something shameful and as the source of mens sins (with little to no accountability for men). While it is important to dress appropriately, I would be hesitant to support a fashion that implied that women’s bodies are something to be ashamed of or to be blamed for the world’s ills. 😦 Seems very against our Catholic faith.

If you have the skill to make your own clothes, then you should be able to modify a pattern to be modest. Not that you necessarily need to modify… my mom is a seamstress and it’s very easy to find modest clothing patterns. Almost every skirt I wear, she has made (and I get comments all the time from people asking me where I get my trendy skirts, lol. Yes, they are modern, fashionable, and modest!)

I can make my own clothes, however modifying a pattern is too scary for me. I know I’m probably a wimp, but need to accept it since I’ve been this way for so long. 🤷

Well, I’m impressed that you can follow a pattern!! My mom has tried to teach me to sew… the closest I’ve come is sewing something with her - all the marks and measurements confuse me. But they’re really there just as a guide. I’ve made many mistakes, and my mom always says “Oh that’s okay, it doesn’t have to be exact!” - and she’s right, lol. The clothes come out looking good. With skirts, you can just about choose any length you want for the hem. With V-necked tops, you can sew in a fashionable “modesty panel” in the V without having to really alter the pattern. If you don’t want something to hug you “skin tight”, then add a few centimeters or inches to your measurements, etc. Gosh, my mom once sewed - get this - VELCRO - onto the undergarments and insides of of my sister’s expensive wedding dress because the heavy, strapless gown was slipping down too low, lol. It worked!

I know that it would create confusion, but I have always wanted to cover my head. I wish there was a “non-Islamic” type of head covering, I dont want to offend Islam or mislead people by wearing their type of head covering, but it would be interesting to have a ‘Christian’ style.

I dont know if I would want to wear it every day forever, but I just would like to see what its like.

I think there are head covering that are not Islamic? I am no expert on this topic 🙂 but I have seen some beautiful head coverings in Mass (not just the usual lace head covering, but gorgeous scarves tied or draped over the head.) They did not look Muslim, but some did have an eastern look to them. One older woman, possibly from eastern Europe, left a real impression on me. She was wearing a feminine, gray suit and a colorful, silky looking scarf around her head. I don’t think it covered her ears, because I recall her wearing some pretty pearl earrings. She just looked so classy, and did not “stick out” or look odd - the outfit was very pretty and subtle.

European women wear headscarves from time to time. My mum used to wear one in winter in South Africa too they just aren’t obssessive about covering all of their hair - that is the difference. I wear a mantilla to Mass and tie my hair back with a long thin scarf when it is really hot in Summer. That is more of an accessory though. That is enough for me. Start by wearing a mantilla in Church and that will probably be enough for you - I had that for a while and covering my head like that in Church has felt enough. 🙂

Yay, thank you, now I know what those are called!!! 🙂 that makes things easier.

It’s called a ‘hat.’ They come in many cute styles and colors.
Haa haa real funny. I think it would be really disrespectful to wear a hat in church or all the time, hats nowadays are pretty secular. I have a bunch of cute ones though, I do love hats.

Lol I cant see the priest enjoying me wearing my Red Army Mao hat I got at the Forbidden City in China as a souvenir. Somehow that doesnt seem holy to me. I think I’ll look for a mantilla.
