Extremely Discouraged

I just read some articles on the ‘Boston Catholic Journal’ website and it absolutely terrified me. Parents that don’t teach the Faith are going to hell along with their children, attachment to sin will end in damnation, total detachment from the World and it’s attractions, total Perfection, etc.
I realize that this is what the Church has always taught, but didn’t know that Truth could be so discouraging for a weak soul like me!
If I use all the info that I gathered from Saints’ Quotes, Private Revelations, and the Perennial teachings of Holy Mother Church… it seems like only 1% of the world’s population is going to make it to Heaven!

" All god wants of man is a peaceful heart."- Meister Eckhart-

Trust in Our Lord and don’t put limits on His mercy. All things are possible for God.

How old are you? Do you attend religious ed?
If you ate a parent, speak to your priest about your fears.

Be at peace. :hug1:

All that is required of us is to practice the faith daily, practice the Sacraments faithfully, prayer and listen to our Priests and obey our Bishops.

Focus on and plan your spiritual journey, that will ensure you arrive at your chosen destination.

Sometimes too much information can be harmful. Stick to the basics.

Remember, you’re not earning heaven. It’s a good thing to exterminate sin from your life, and to always be growing in knowledge and holiness, and you’ll find a lot of people use strong language to exhort complacent people into doing just that. Complacency can be an insidious thing. You shouldn’t ever think “ok, I’m good enough, I can stop learning now and I can stop trying to do better.” But it’s a mistake to think you’re going to become perfect overnight, and it’s a mistake to forget God’s mercy. Stumbling here and there won’t wreck you for good. That’s what confession is for. It’s the folks that don’t try to change, that decide to keep on doing what they feel like doing anyway, that are the ones that are in real danger.

I had a teacher use an analogy one time that was helpful to me. Imagine you’re in the woods at night, and you’re trying to follow a path through them. You can’t see the end of the path, or even where the next turn is for that matter. But you can see a few feet in front of you because of your lantern. All you have to do is take the next step. When you move forward, the lantern moves with you. Then, you can see a little further. Keep taking each step in turn, see what the light reveals, then step again. You’ll get through soon enough just focusing on your next step.

Well… you have to think about the nature of Heaven… what it is. Heaven is experiencing the direct, unfiltered presence of God. If a parent knowingly refuses to teach their child about God, about the literal cause and purpose behind our existence… well… that is causing spiritual harm to the child, and we know what Jesus said about harming kids…

Do not be so afraid, God does not ask that we be perfect in this life. We need to avoid mortal sin because it kills God’s grace in our soul and cuts us off from Him. Thankfully, God provides reconciliation, so that no matter what we’ve done, we can return to Him and be forgiven!

The way I understand Christianity, faith in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior is the way eternal salvation.

I find it difficult to reconcile this with the Catholic church’s teachings that the Sacraments are necessary for salvation.

Are we to believe that if we die unbaptized or with sins on our hearts that we haven’t confessed that we would go to hell?

That would mean very, very few people on this earth stand a chance of going to heaven since the majority of the world isn’t aware of the supposed requirements for getting in to heaven.

And every time this comes up, the person asking is assumed to be a kid, someone immature that can’t wrap their brain around it. So before you ask, I’m an adult…

I’m afraid you misunderstand. Yes, Jesus speaks about faith being necessary. He also states, in no uncertain terms, that Baptism (a sacrament) is necessary for salvation as well. Beyond this, He granted the Apostles the ability to forgiven sins. Considering that in almost every interaction Jesus has with someone seeking physical healing, the very first thing He does is tell them that their sins are forgiven, it seems evident that that’s pretty high up there on His list as well. Sacraments have been a part of Christendom from it’s earliest times, and the writings of the earliest Church Fathers attest to this fact, not even counting all the references to them and their necessity we find in the NT.
Are we to believe that if we die unbaptized or with sins on our hearts that we haven’t confessed that we would go to hell?
As to dying unbaptized, Jesus said it was necessary, so it doesn’t look good if you’re not. With that said, God is not bound by the sacraments, and it is entirely within His prerogative to offer salvation to someone apart from Baptism. He simply hasn’t made any other method known to us, so given all that, it seems pretty important.

On the subject of sins, Mortal sins kill our love for God, cutting us off from Heaven eternally. That’s why they’re called mortal. Venial sins do not do this, and salvation is still possible with them. This is actually what purgatory is for, to cleanse us of those sins and the effects of our other sins so that we can be in God’s presence. (“Nothing unclean can stand before God.”)
That would mean very, very few people on this earth stand a chance of going to heaven since the majority of the world isn’t aware of the supposed requirements for getting in to heaven.
What you’re describing is known as invincible ignorance. Catholics do not believe that people go to Hell for something they can have no knowledge of, otherwise, anyone who lived before the time of Christ would have been damned to Hell regardless simply because baptism wasn’t available to them.

Salvation is a very deep theological issue that the Church has spent the last two-thousand years studying. The positions we hold are the result of this study, and should not be dismissed offhand simply because they don’t sound pleasant. The reality of hell isn’t pleasant, that’s why it’s important to speak about it.
And every time this comes up, the person asking is assumed to be a kid, someone immature that can’t wrap their brain around it. So before you ask, I’m an adult…
No one said you were a kid. Plenty of adults hold these misunderstandings simply because they have never studied the Church’s position, or because they have been actively misinformed by other people who lack understanding. That’s not a condemnation, just an observation.

Baby steps. Today is enough for each of us, and we are instructed not to worry about tomorrow. Make right choices that current day. Request the help of the saints in morning prayers, and devotion to the Sacred Heart and/or Rosary. At the end of the day thanks all around for their help, followed by the days examination of conscience and mental notes for Sunday’s confession(if necessary), and Devine Mercy Chaplet.

You will note that if we project tomorrow, or run the play back ‘tape’ of the past, life seems over reaching and futile and we find ourselves tormented about what happened yesterday pulling our hair out. But we are only to handle our lives in portions. How much easier to remember at the end of the day that our offering was the best or can be improved.

I think it’s the devil that has us running around like this. I get caught up that way too. 😊

It is really very simple. God loves us and wants us to love Him back. I love the passage where Jesus’ asks Simon Peter if he loved Him three times and Peter responds three times YES! Take heart, say YES!

Matthew 22:36-40
36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.
38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.

John 3:14-21
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.
16 For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him.

18 He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil.
20 For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.
21 But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.

John 21:15-17
15 When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs.
17 He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep

Read up on the Miraculous Medal.
Also read on making the 5 first Saturdays.
Look up the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

“What is impossible for man is possible for God” … Jesus.
Just keep asking for his mercy. When you no longer ask, then you should start fretting.

I have anxiety myself. The names of Mary and Jesus help me so much. Devotion to Jesus through Mary is for weak souls like me. We don’t know people’s hearts either. God loves everyone and wants us to trust in His Infinite Goodness.

Then that’s prompting you to read something that lifts your spirit.

May I suggest a simple read,

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Heaven
But Never Dreamed of Asking
