Exultet

This is my all time favorite Catholic prayer and I can’t wait for the Easter vigil to hear our deacon sing. We were discussing the Exultet in our RCIA session last Sunday and we were wondering who wrote the prayer. I know it was sung in the ancient church:shrug: at the vigil, but I can’t seem to find who wrote the prayer or where it actually came from. Thank you for all answers.

Some of its history is in the 1909 Cathollic Encyclopedia at newadvent.org/cathen/05730b.htm . It has “The regularity of the metrical cursus of the “Exultet” would lead us to place the date of its composition perhaps as early as the fifth century, and not later than the seventh.”

I love this prayer.

Unfortunately, it gets butchered every year by our cantor. She is allowed to change the words to make it inclusive and politically correct. “Creator” instead of “Father”, etc., stripping away a lot of the beautiful familial meaning of this most glorious prayer.

WOW, can’t believe your pastor would allow that. This is a BIG no no in the church. Can’t you talk to your bishop about this? I would find another parish if mine allowed that! I’ll will say prayers.:nope:

No one is allowed to add or subtract anything from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (norms, texts, readings, prayers) on their own authority. This is a very serious abuse and should be discussed with the priest in a charitable manner.

What is almost as bad is what OCP has done to the Exultet. You aren’t supposed to proclaim it with musical instruments; however, the creative geniuses at OCP have inserted notations for drum beats throughout the chanting of the prayer.

drum beats? Oh dear, I have fears that if this is new, it will be added to our parish this year. Oh my.
I have been trying to get up the courage for years to discuss this with our pastor. Any words of wisdom on how to do this charitably would be appreciated. He is not easy to talk to.
