Writing in *Reason *Magazine, Paul Sperry raises the possibility that the identification of Mohammed Atta by Able Danger is a case of mistaken identity.

Excerpt…
*Navy Capt. Scott J. Phillpott, who headed a Pentagon counterterrorism project codenamed Able Danger, has claimed that as early as January 2000, his team identified lead hijacker Atta as part of an al-Qaeda terror cell operating out of Brooklyn. *

That’s all very curious, however, because according to German police records, Atta was nowhere near the U.S. then. He was in Hamburg. And it wasn’t until March 22, 2000, that Atta, an Egyptian national, began contacting flight schools here to see about taking lessons

The entire article…

Nope, doesn’t look like a case of mistaken identity. From today’s Senate hearing:

I was told that Able Danger identified the Brooklyn cell – to include Mohammed Atta and three other 9/11 hijackers – more than one year before September 11, 2001. - Rep. **Curt Weldon **

As part of their efforts multiple individuals associated with Able Danger have stated that they identified four of the terrorists, including Mohammed Atta, who subsequently were involved in the terrorist attacks on 9/11. - MARK ZAID, ESQ. (surrogate for several witnesses who the Department of Defense has forbidden from appearing before the hearing. )

Several participants in the Able Danger project have recently come forward to say that the project identified Mohammed Atta, the leader of the hijackers who engineered the September 11th attacks, one year prior to those horrific attacks. - Senator **Patrick Leahy **

You could be right. I just thought this was an interesting possibility to consider.

I agree, and it may yet be the case. Until we hear directly from the witnesses, we may not know.

Sen. Biden by the way also said he understood that there were 5 people discovered by the Pentagon who saw that Atta’s photo and/or name in Able Danger charts. (see c-span.org for today’s video).

Some speculation here:

What is truly frightening is that Democrats will say anything, grasp on to anything, distort all day long, put national security in danger to protect their party and Bill Clinton in particular.

Republicans want answers. Conservative blogs didn’t dismiss Able Danger but they warned each over off it until we got more information (Powerline and Captain’s Quarters were very careful). Conservative don’t care if the Pentagon or anyone else takes a hit. They want the nation protected.

As we can see from this post (not the article itself), Liberals have a different agenda.

I think you’re imagining things with your partisan references. And I don’t know what you mean by that last sentence. You have it on high authority that Able Danger is not a case of mistaken ID? To be honest, I don’t know whether it is or it isn’t, but it’s something we need to keep an open mind about, sans more evidence.

Looks like the DoD witnesses will now testify.
