I’m partly being sarcastic…

My brothers and my sister are on Facebook and want me to be on it so we can stay in touch easier. It does help, because we all have different schedules and live far away. But for me, being so alone and poor and basically a failure at life, it is one of the worst things in the world.
Wha???
When I first got on FB I thought it was a place where you could be social- meet old friends, make new friends. But in reality it is high school for “adults”. Everyone puts up flattering pictures of themselves and their families just to get comments. They post pictures of what they have, or the great places they went, and so forth. They show super happy couples in love.
I’ll be honest. FB, Twitter, and other equivalents - there are many local country specific FB equivalents - are for me really pretty sad. It’s people basically posting nonsense, mostly things most people don’t care about and probably thinking “look at me, I’ve posted a picture of Chinese Take Out I had” or here’s a snapshot of my baby’s first soiled diaper, or my holiday to Thailand, etc. It’s pure narcissism. But not only that, it’s posting stuff, thinking one is great and imagining a audience of hundreds or even thousands reading one’s pearls of wisdom and multimedia, where really few people care. LOL.
I have done nothing in life, and I have nothing to crow about. My FB cover photo is blank, my profile picture is blank. I try not to say anything because all my 15 “friends” are too busy to comment. That’s because they have lives.
Good for you. I also have an empty FB profile. Had to create on once to access something work related.
Facebook is depressing, and exacerbates all the bad things I ever thought of myself.
No, no, no. You’re an independently thinking realist. And you’re humble. You haven’t done anything important? Well neither have most people.
Does anyone else have this problem? Feel like you’ve wasted your life when you look at FB?
I don’t visit FB profiles much.

Maddox did a great parody of social media.

FB, Twitter, etc are garbage. What’s worse is that people often post confidential things which allows for identity theft. Employers can check what they’re up to and one could lose one’s job this way, or never get hired in the first place. Once you put stuff online under your name, it will be there forever. Avoid FB like the plague, friend.

God bless and don’t feel down. You can always improve your life. And besides what you really need to do is what’s important for God, ne? I’m sure posting nonsense is not our most important purpose down here. Take care.

My thoughts exactly!

back when I did have a FB account, it was nice to connect with friends I went to school with, but after awhile I noticed most of these people just posted pics of their kids, vacation pics and other stuff no one is interested in seeing…reminded me of the boring family that always wants to show vacation slides and videos. LOL

I think FB is a reassurance for people who lack friends in the real world too, they get all kinds of friend requests online and love to talk about how many ‘friends’ they have, but Id like to know how many of these people they could depend on if their car broke down somewhere and they needed help, or help with moving, etc. FB friends are generally just fake friends, who will only go as far as sending online messages and thats about it.

I cannot understand why ANYONE would even upload personal or private info. they are almost asking for trouble or ID theft, and should know better. I most secure thing I have ever put online is my cell phone number, those people that post their bank acct info, social security number, etc are nuts!!

Ist thing true…People want to show off things in FB…
I have okayish achievements in life.but still I feel that I wasted my life when I look at FB.
It is really depressing to have a FB account…Being blissfully ignorant about others is better

I think it is a fad.

Think back to when you were in high school, or back to 20 yrs ago, how many popular things at that time are still popular today? I graduated high school in 1994 and cannot think of anything that stood the test of time in this sense. Usually things like FB, that are widely popular, end up crashing suddenly with no warning and are quickly forgotten.

I expect the same thing will happen with FB eventually, and kids in high school today, 10-20 yrs down the road, will be looking back, laughing, remembering how popular FB was, just as older people do today about popular things in their school days.

When a fad is at the height of its popularity, very few people can even speculate about that particular item being a fad and often say, it will be around forever, dont know what I did without it, and other such sayings.
I agree, FB, like might be around for a while, but it’s attraction will fade over time. Even internet forums are not what they once were. 😃

I signed up for Facebook when it first started out for just college students. It was a neat thing back then. That was probably back in 2004 or 2005. These days I pretty much just sign on, check the news feed quick just to see if anything interesting is going on, then sign off. I’ve also unfriended lots of people that I either didn’t know too well or never knew at all.

Some of my friends like to message me on Facebook and I tell them to stop and to message me on Google Hangouts because I don’t like to be forced to use Facebook. I only ever post messages on there when I need to contact people who I don’t have any other way of contacting. That’s the main use I get out of it.

Because I dont have a FB account, I can’t comment on what the OP is going through. But I will say something regarding Facebook. I always wanted to avoid social media because of the way people abuse it. But, as I have heard time and time again from some catholic apologists, evangelists, commenters etc, I have come to understand that social media in itself isn’t sinful. It is a tool. It is no different than television, books, movies, drinks, transportation or any other temporal good. Are people gonna abuse these? Of course they are; all of us are sinners. But as catholics, we are called to *sancifty * all the goods in the world, that God has priovided us. The word sanctify means to make something be set apart, or make holy. Social Media is no different.

On the other hand, we do have to admit that social media takes out alot of our time during the day and is one extra thing that we have to worry about. As a matter of fact, all these extra things can make a person down write anxious.

I am on Facebook only because I am self-employed and need ways for people to reach me. Not a fan of the “social” farce.

OK I’m in my thirties but use only twitter, used to have a fb but deleted it years ago.
It could be because since I’m unmarried without kids and according to an internet poll have the mental age of a 21 year old lol.

I do agree that seeing the ‘perfect’ image people project in Facebook could be depressing and most people seem to want to appear to have perfect lives.

I once read a quote on twitter “Facebook makes you hate people you actually know. Twitter makes you love people you’ve never met.”

OK so it’s not always the case but I find it somewhat accurate. Most people that use twitter use it to connect to complete strangers with whom they have some sort of fandom in common. I’ve found people don’t really reveal much of themselves and only relate to each other based on the interests they have.

Yes some might become twitter ‘friends’ and spill some stuff to each other but it’s precisely because they can keep their anonymity.

I myself only use it to spazz about tv s hows and different bands and music groups with others and most i interact with don’t have a clue about me or I them and no one really cares It’s a total escape from reality. A few of my family follow me but we don’t really interact on it.

Frankly like anything using either too much is not healthy. I can tell you though that amongst young people fb use is way down. They do have accounts but prefer twitter or tumblr which is another story lol.

I think the reason that older people don’t use twitter is that it is harder to grasp at first and the whole hashtag and @ and the 140 character limit is too much for some.
Some are getting into it though and teens really hate it lol 😉

Facebook and Twitter are not the same.

When I discovered what Twitter was about, I didn’t think twice before permanently deleting my Facebook, without warning.

I admit, there is a corner of Twitter that looks like Facebook, that is a wild, with instaselfies, Miley Cyrus and so on.

But trust me, it is pretty easy to reach to the true potential of Twitter, where daily I have been getting brilliant ideas and academic references to my lifelong learning.

P.S. The Holy Father only has an official social media account on Twitter if I am not mistaken.

Facebook and Twitter are both what you make of them.

Is there no degree of personal responsibility at all?

I don’t miss it 🙂 I went from 2d faces to 3d.

I agree with a lot of the posts on this thread - too many people use Facebook as a way to gain attention to explicit photo’s of themselves.

I read an article yesterday that says teenagers today consider facebook to be dead and buried, so whats left is the adults still thinking its ‘cool’ or fashionable to have a FB page…that can only go on for so long though, before long, they will be using whatever the teenagers are using.

Its sad that a good many adults today have forgotten that other people find it incredibly boring to see pictures of another families vacations, family pictures, etc. LOL Remember the boring family that breaks out slides of their vacations, and kids birthday parties?!! I guess people have misunderstood that to believe other people actually want to see these things LOL.

It’s not about being ‘cool,’ as I could not care less about that. It is for keeping touch with my small circle, who actually appreciate whatever pictures I post, and vice versa, and for times when I want to let them know we’re okay in one easy step, like after Sandy.

Let the teenagers and trend monkeys do as they wish. I’ll keep my facebook until something better comes along.

I mentioned what a perfect life a friend’s pictures portrayed. He compared FB to a hotel website - things look much better in the photos.

Agree. If one finds it “boring” to look at others photos, just scroll on by. No one is forcing you to look at them. Or better yet, don’t even log on to facebook. Myself, I appreciate seeing photos of friends, I rarely or never get to see, due to distance.
