(This is my first post. I hope I don’t mess up! :))

So, as background information, when I was living a more immoral life, a female friend and I had kind of a joke going about “getting married.” We eventually did for fun on a different forum (I’m not sure how serious she was about it, but I thought it was just to be silly).

Fast forwarding a bit, after I had a change of heart and returned to Christ, I realized we had been “married” a year ago. I posted something on her Facebook noting this, simply because I thought it was a fun memory (fun because we had all of our cyber-friends there all joking and laughing and having a good time). She asked me why we weren’t “married” on Facebook. I thought about this and decided there was nothing wrong with changing our relationship statuses to “married,” so I did.

After some deliberation, I decided to take that back and removed my relationship status altogether (as in I don’t have one and no one can see that).

Would this be a sin, since we’re both female? Before I went ahead and gave her permission to make our statuses “married,” I didn’t think it would be a sin, because it was just for fun and not a permanent thing. I don’t support homosexual “marriage,” either: my position conforms to Catholic teaching. I used to consider myself bisexual, but I’ve changed my ways and realized I’m actually straight. I’m really not sure if I did something wrong, but I feel like a complete idiot now. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks. 😊

So I understand…you only pretended to be married on facebook? You didn’t have an actual romantic relationship?

Was it obvously a joke? Did all who participated know it was a joke?

Long before this happened, we had a bit of a romantic friendship. I’ve left it behind as part of my “bad past,” if you will - part of what I gave up to return to my faith. We’re only close platonic friends now.

I thought it was obviously a joke. There were some people who “liked” the status, but judging from who these people were, they took it as something light-hearted and funny. I can’t imagine either of them taking it seriously.

I honestly just feel so bad about all of this. I normally make better decisions, especially regarding something as sacred as marriage. Fortunately, I’ve learned never to do that again!

I think from your attitude towards it, if it were a sin, it was a very venial one. You weren’t doing it to ‘slap God in the face’ or to purposely make fun of a sacrament. In fact, your attitude in handling it and feeling sorry about it means you definitely realize how important the sacrament is. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. If you still feel convicted about it, you can always go to Reconciliation and confess it.
