Facetime with Jesus/24 Hour Webcam at Adoration Chapel

I have been greatly blessed by the live webcam feed from the Adoration Chapel at St. John of Rochester in Fairport, New York. I look at it like “Facetime” with Jesus. I can look at Him and talk to Him anytime. Even if I’m already in bed in my jammies, I can pull up the link and there He is ready to listen. I love it. Or I can pull it up while I say my rosary, which I have found very efficacious. Obviously I am not saying that this is a substitute for going to Adoration in person,only that this technology has blessed me tremendously when it’s not possible for me to be there in person. Just wanted to share.

The website says “You may view the chapel 24/7 except when the Lord is reposed due to extreme weather conditions. You may also view morning Mass at this site weekdays at 6:30 am and 8:30 am. The Eucharist is reposed during those services.”

Does anyone have a negative opinion of these webcams? I mean to me it seems an odd juxtaposition to have the adoration on a webcam from the comfort of your own home. Not unlike those televised masses which while interesting, are not a replacement for the real thing. And in some ways could even be considered disrespectful.

Just last weekend EWTN broadcasted a live Holy Hour in which the Blessed Sacrament was exposed in the monstrance while the rosary and other prayers were prayed for persecuted Christians and world peace. My husband and children and I watched it and prayed along with Father Leonard. Was that wrong to do since we were in the comfort of our own home?

Masses have been televised now for over 60 years, and no pope has spoken out against them. Saint John Paul II allowed and even encouraged Masses he presided over to be televised, the moment of consecration and all. I have seen countless Benedictions aired on live television. Bishops do not speak out against it. Cardinals do not speak out against it. Popes do not speak out against it. The Catechism does not speak against it. Until the Magesterium has a negative opinion about it, I will not.

May I present a different point of view?
For the sick, homebound, hospitalized, or those unable to drive or with limited mobility, this is a wonderful option. They can still participate in the mass or adoration this way. And it may be all they have.

While I will not condemn it nor even criticize it, it’s definitely not my thing. Adoration is a sacramental experience. A physical experience. I am all for adoration if I am physically in the church or chapel. If alone at home I would rather venerate an icon of the Lord. Perhaps that’s the Eastern influence in my spirituality. I have a cousin who is Orthodox and see him prostrate before the icons in his home. That’s a sacramental experience. Those icons are physical, holy sacramentals with him in the room.

I love going to the Adoration Chapel chapel at my parish** to be in the physical presence of Our Lord.**

What makes me uncomfortable about live webcams is that I am not in His physical presence. So all that is left for me is to gaze upon the physical accidental of bread. And that just feels weird to me.

I see what you mean. I would say that if a person can go in person and doesn’t because they want to relax at home, that might be an issue.

However, if anyone, anytime, chooses to focus on Jesus and pray I say that’s wonderful. There are many negative things a person could be doing instead.

I would think that this would probably be one of the reasons that it’s done, and also for those who may be in more remote or more rural areas of the world, where getting to an open church or chapel may be more of a difficulty.

I think that people need to consider these reasons, when considering online Adoration webcams.

No, I don’t have a negative opinion of them.

I think that they can reach people who may not otherwise be able to adore Jesus, and who may want to do so.

I believe that the reason that it’s done is for the very reason that Franciscan Way mentioned in his/her post: So that the sick and homebound have a way of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

I also mentioned that it is probably also done so that people who don’t have ready access to a church or chapel in their part of the country/world can also adore Jesus, too.
