catholiceducation.org/articles/facts/fm0027.html This details the history and process of crucifixion. Reading this made me grateful for the love that Christ bore us until He died. A love that he still has for us in heaven.
Reading this along with my remembrance of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” (also during the scenes where the Jesus character was being “scourged” Jim Caviezel, the actor who portrayed Jesus was accidentally hit in the back by one of the whips and he related in an interview that just that one blow was enough to about wipe him out. The actors portraying the soldiers were actually hitting a piece of plywood that was hidden from the camera). When you consider Jesus was not just play-acting but was actually enduring the real thing, you have to wonder that he had any strength at all to carry the cross to Golgotha, and the love that kept him going until the Crucifixion was completed!!! I still can’t fathom why he wanted to do that for me!

My dad and I watch that movie every Good Friday. Watching the events play out in front of me in startling realism really drives home John 3:16 for me.
