For my penance I was supposed to avoid Facebook and video games for four hours from when I got home. An hour in I got a message that I was very curious about so I checked quickly. From there, restarted the 4 hours, but ended up doing more to be safe. Did my initial failure count as a mortal sin? I thought it could when I did it, but I’m also scrupulous.

Sounds to me like you did your four hours, so you’re okay.

But it also sounds like you are addicted.

I’m not addicted. The reason I checked the message was because it came from somebody in a ministry I’m involved in. I was told to expect a message about what we will be doing next, over the next couple of weeks. When i saw a message came through i went to close it so my phone wouldn’t be flashing. It really bothers me. I saw that the message was from the person in charge so I thought it would be that message and so I checked because I was excited about our next plan. When I saw it wasn’t what I thought, I quickly closed everything without any desire to read anything further. Then I easily proceeded through the next five hours without the temptation to check.

I honestly believe the penance was a result of the priest misunderstanding my scrupulousity/OCD. I’m in the middle of a month without access to my confessor. I had to go to a priest that doesn’t know me at all. I told him about my scruples, but I feel be may have misunderstood some things.

Sounds like you are ok…you do need to work on the OCD issues, I know that can be quite the challenge! Good luck, have a happy life. God Bless!

IMHO, not sure this was a good excuse. You were instructed to stay off FB from the time you got home. You should NOT have been looking, period. Is “curiosity” a reason to disregard the penance, even for a minute…? It doesn’t sound like it was something that had to be addressed immediately (like news about someone being on their deathbed, for instance).

As far as I know, failure to follow Father’s instructions for penance is not a mortal sin.

If you worry often about mortal sin, please review the three conditions:
CCC 1857: For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.”
and go back to that whenever the question comes up.

Thanks for the replies. They’re helpful. I have been working on my OCD amd it has been getting better, but I just had a rough two weeks. My confessor helps with the scruples a lot, so when I see him again thay will help. I am overall better than I was a year ago. Thanks again; I appreciate everyone’s replies.

I wasn’t trying to justify doing it, just that I don’t have an addiction. I knew it wasn’t good, that’s why I became super anxious afterwards and ended up restarting the time. I had to have my phone near me, seriously, I did. That’s not an excuse; I frequently get things through my phone that do require an instant reply. My phone is linked to Facebook, so as I was reading a book, I caught the blue flash on the top of my screen. I grabbed my phone to get rid of it. That flash raises my anxiety (not much, but it still it really distracts me) so I wanted it gone. I saw who it was from and was going to wait but then got worried that the person would expect an immediate reply. So I quickly checked.

Facebook friends will carry on without you when you do not reply immediately.

I know. With it being possibly about an obligation it was harder for me to put off. I knew it could wait, but i was begginning to worry it couldn’t. I put off looking at or replying to things on Facebook all the time. Plus I thought it was something I had been waiting weeks to find out and so it was harder to not look.

But I really don’t have an addiction.

Sounds like you have things under control. Keep up the good work!
