Today, I wanted to go to Mass, but my Mother wouldn’t let me, because the roads were icy. The church, however, was not closed. I know that unbaptized people are not obliged to go to Mass, but it feels weird not going to Mass. How can I get over this? 😦

God knows your situation better than you think. Your mom was just thinking about your safety, and that’s understandable. So, pray for whatever you are feeling at the moment and be assured of God’s forgiveness. He knows there are times when you don’t get to Church. As long as the reasons are valid, like icy roads, then I think His forgiveness is a given. But if it was because of something simple, like oversleeping or not going just because you didn’t feel like going, talk to your priest about any kind of penance that may be an encouragement to not missing for that reason again.

If you read the OP, he is unbaptized, so no obligation, no sin, no need to talk to his priest for a penance.

Not your fault if your parents forbade you; you need full free will for mortal sin, plus you’re not baptized. Also, legitimate safety concerns, if I’m not mistaken, are a valid reason to miss Mass- if you can’t leave the house for dear of an icy death, you’re literally housebound. If you still feel bad, pray a spiritual communion. You can also talk to the local priest. Remember, God knows your heart. 🙂

Even if baptized, still not a sin. Hey, it was icy! You’re worrying too much!

Well, if you miss that time with God-- go online and read the scriptures of the day and contemplate them. Perhaps say a rosary. Not a replacement for Mass, but it may comfort you.

We do need to use good judgment when conditions are dangerous. While we might think it’s noble to brave the elements- consider that if you wreck or get into some type of trouble you place a burden/risk on others who come to your aid. You also divert those resources from other events which may be occurring at the same time. Another way of saying trust your mother on this, I’m sure she’s not making a capricious decision.

Take your concern to the Lord in prayer. There is no reason to fear God when God sees your heart and you know that you are doing all you can to do His will.

Keep in mind too that the church may be open simply for those few who live very close and walking distance. The priests usually live right next door and so they would be obligated to carry on God’ will by having Mass. Just be there in spirit with them.

Can you watch Mass on TV or maybe EWTN online?

Watch EWTN,. It is always my backup too when I can’t attend mass
