I can’t take it. I am a failure as a husband and father. I have not had a job in years. My wife does not desire me. I am starving because my marital sex needs are not being met! The fact that my wife has such apathy towards me is tearing me up inside. I can’ take it. I am stuck in a limbo in all areas of my life. I don’t know what to do. I wish I could leave. But I am too weak. I am dependent on her! I try. Believe me I try. Nothing works for me.

I would suspect a huge part of the problem regarding your wife not desiring you probably has to do with the unemployed thing. Why do you think you have not been able to find a job? What is your profession?

I am so sorry you are going through a rough time. 😦

I will pray for you and your family.

Ouch. I’m sorry you are going through this.

When things get overwhelming, it can be difficult to know where to start to change.

An old Chinese proverb states that a journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step.

You are not going to change tomorrow into Superman - but you can change tomorrow into being better than today. First you can pray that you see what opportunities are there for you.

How can you be a better dad?
How can you be a better husband?
What kind of job can you do?
What is it you want of you life?

Stories abound about overweight 40 year olds that end up running marathons. I’ve known people who have sacrificed everything in midlife to go back to school and do what they really want to do.

So while being unemployed has to be depressing - it may also be an opportunity for you to figure out what exactly you want to do with your life.

You mention that you are a dad - I can’t tell what challenges that provides for you gaining employment. You don’t mention your child(ren)'s ages. But if you are at home because your family needs you for child care - then take every opportunity to make your home the most warm welcoming home that you are able. You don’t mention why you think yourself a failure as a dad - how do your children feel?

I can’t tell you that your wife will fall back in love with you overnight. But I can tell you that you will like yourself a whole lot more. Once you like yourself more, others will find you more attractive.

Thanks. But you know what? Even when I have a job I rarely got sex! It’s pathetic! I am about to go out and smoke again.

Yeah, I don’t understand why some people do that to their spouses.

What does she say to you when you’ve tried talking to her about it?

There is a dignity that comes to the able-bodied (or otherwise able) when they have constructive work to do, this is true. That doesn’t mean you’re a failure because you haven’t been able to find a job.

You have several problems going on. The first is that you seem to be literally “dis-couraged.” You are like a pump that is not primed. That can change, but very few people manage it alone. Get some outside help with that.

The second is that you don’t have something constructive to do or you don’t feel as if it matters if you do what’s there to do. That’s not true. There are millions of stay-at-home moms that can tell you that not having a salaried job and not having any work to do are two separate things! Parishes could not survive without the work of the people who don’t get paid. Again, though: if you’re discouraged, you might tell yourself that you have to be super productive the first day. No. Start by adding so good habitual contributions to your household, one every week. If you don’t understand what I mean, go to the website FlyLady.net. It is geared towards home care, but you can adapt the ideas for whatever work your household would benefit from. You’ll learn to get up out of bed and dress every day as if you have a job to do, you’ll learn to get stuff done around the house that needs doing, and so on.

The other problem, though, is between yourself and your wife. What that has to do with the discouragements you’re going through in the rest of your life is hard to say. It could be a cause, it could be a result, it could be both, it could even be neither. Take that to a counselor, too. I would say, though, that dressing and grooming yourself every day and at all times according to what you think she finds attractive will not hurt. If she doesn’t like it, well, at least you will feel as if you’re doing your part. If you’re not already doing it, get some regular exercise. It will help your outlook, it will help your energy level, and it will probably make you more attractive to her, in the bargain. Mostly, though, it will get some good chemicals going in your brain, and your body needs that. Put that very high on your list: go to bed and get up at regular and reasonable times for a working person–you ought to be up in time to make your wife breakfast, plus her lunch if she’ll take one, and to get her off to work–keep yourself well-groomed all of the time (with shoes on, appropriate for the work you’ll be doing that day, but no gym clothes except for exercising), and exercise every day, no excuses. I think those three things will help more than you know. The FlyLady will help you get that going. If you don’t know how to cook, I bet your wife will help you to learn how.

I’m not saying that you have to get loads of counseling. I have been depressed and found that relatively little feedback can be a big help, because when you’re depressed you see things from a distorted viewpoint. Even a little bit of feedback that lets you know that you are being too hard on yourself or too pessimistic, with suggestions for how to actually address that, can be a huge help. Honestly, I’ve had one talk with someone who knew what they were doing to be a big help. I wouldn’t stop with that, were I you, but I am saying that I’ve stopped with just that much and found it was still a night and day improvement from trying to face up to my pessimistic outlook on my own.

Oh, and stop smoking, but especially if your wife does not smoke and SUPER-ESPECIALLY if she used to smoke but doesn’t smoke any more. Don’t think you can sneak them, either. Cigarette smoke is a huge turn-off to a non-smoker, they can smell it two miles away, reformed smokers are probably more adamant about this than anybody except asthmatics, and coming home to a smoke-smelling house can be a source of big resentment. Having to pay for cigarettes for someone who doesn’t work can also cause a lot of resentment. I don’t know of any non-smokers who do not feel that way (although I’m sure there are some out there somewhere), even the ones who didn’t think they would when they married their smoker. If your wife doesn’t smoke and you quit with her as one of your reasons for wanting to do it, that cannot but help your marriage. And hey, if it doesn’t help your marriage, it will still help you live longer and less likely to spend the last years of your life as a cancer or chronic lung disease patient. 👍

Ouch. I’m sorry you are going through this.

That’s for sure. She is so bossy. I feel like I am a beaten man. She doesn’t respect me! She doesn’t want me!

Thank you for understanding this. We have no family to help us raise our child. He is 12. So it’s a blessing that I am home. But he doesn’t see me as the provider which bothers me. And my wife does not respect me, really very much. I am sex starved. I have tried oh so hard to be successful but all those jobs did not work out. I don’t drink. I am honest. I guess it was my frustration level that did me in. Now are checking account id dwindling down. Why? Because I spend too much money!!! I AM JUST NO GOOD! GOD HELP ME. I TRY TO CHANGE BUT I JUST DON’T MAKE IT.

I can’t tell you that your wife will fall back in love with you overnight. But I can tell you that you will like yourself a whole lot more. Once you like yourself more, others will find you more attractive.

If you have no money, ask your pastor for some encouragement and ask if Catholic Charities or someone similar might be able to help you with counseling. And again, many people have made the changes they need to make with the help of the FlyLady. Do check her out. You don’t have to buy the stuff she sells; it is the technique that I’m talking about. You can probably find her book, Sink Reflections, at a local library, so you can learn this all for free. In fact, I’d suggest you try to read her book before you check out her website…

What job are you looking for? Roughly…where are you located?

Welcome to the world of the ‘Disposable Male.’ See ‘Brifault’s Law.’ It is very true that in today’s society men have been conditioned to be deemed of no value (which of course is untrue) unless he is ‘Providing.’ The concept of ‘Stay at Home Dad’ is truly only offered ‘lip service’ for purposes of assuring the visual maintenance of the current disingenuous ’ Politically Correct Paradigm.’ The actuality is** far **from the touted ideal for the vast majority of men -yes?

Feminism has assured that it is ok for women to have a choice - Career or Motherhood. Feminism also says a woman *can have it all *as well - being a Mother and a Career person.

Not so much, as you may have noticed, with men - eh?

Perhaps you should start thinking of yourself as the ‘New Icon’ of Men! Men have historically been demanded to be the Primary Provider - yes? Why should men be the** slaves?** Especially since Men, for all our efforts, are nowbeing* publicly* castigated via gender studies classes throughout the majority of college campuses for inflicting ‘The Dominant Male Patriarchy’ on women as claimed by Liberals and Feminists!!
Perhaps males should demand ‘Reparations Affirmitive Action’ and demand that women be the sole provider in a marriage eh? 😉

March on comrade!👍

Time for some get back regards,
Nim.

Have you read “Be a Man!” by Father Larry Richard?

Thanks. But you know what? Even when I have a job I rarely got sex! It’s pathetic! I am about to go out and smoke again.
You know what, it sounds like your understanding of the goals of a successful life are satisfaction of the physical appetites: Sexual satisfaction when desired, money to eliminate any need of worry and lack of respect, nicotine when the appetite calls. And the changes you try seem like they are to try and get these appetites satisfied, but keeping these same goals, because when one dies, the chance for happiness ends.

Going to mass and confession are not for improving the chances for sexual satisfaction from your wife because you think you gain respect, nor are they for thinking God will somehow now help you find a perfect job to end your own self-disrespect. In mass and confession you are forcing your mind and body to look at a different meaning of the goal of life, a different goal of happiness, which is being in the presence of God, of Jesus, with a happy and clear conscience. It is giving up your old meanings of life as satisfaction of appetites and taking on a new meaning of your goal as life at one with Christ. Success in Manhood is being one with Christ, it is not having sex with your wife a certain quantity of times per week, it is not having a job that ends all question of money.

Choose to go the narrow way.

I’m praying for you and your wife for your marriage to be restored and for God to protect you and lead you to where you need to go to get help and to find work. Try not to keep building up those walls of disent between you and your wife. Keep the communication lines open and be honest with her. Remember your wedding vows…in good times and in bad.

Maybe this link can help you find a therapist in your area:

Good luck and may you find peace and joy in your life.

Hmmmm, well I will give you my two cents.
First sex or lack of will not kill you. Control your physical desires and you will see what a difference it will make. My wife and I practice NFP and it means with her cycle, I have to go 3 weeks without sex. I do that with little problem. Also, after each kid, we had to go 6 weeks, and when we were waiting for the return of her cycle, we went 3 months. I have learned to contain my desires so it will not control me.

What I do not understand is why are not able to get a job or hold a job? Are you picking the wrong Jobs, or is there a disability at play here or something else. Please elaborate.

So basically what you’re saying is that you’re almost as big a loser as Simon Peter was as of the day before the resurrection. How’d that work out? Get a St. Peter holy card, get your butt to confession (after spending some quality time with a good examination of conscience), and start allowing Grace to rebuild your soul.

Grace is a gift, but it isn’t autopilot. It’s a process and progression. Build a daily prayer life, get to the sacraments more often, excercise, read. Take on projects at home while you are job hunting. You can scrub, paint, toss out old junk, prune landscapes, reseed dead grass, learn auto repair.

You’ve got time on your hands while you job hunt. You have the Holy Spirit in your soul. You’ve got access to the internet. Dang, man you can do practically ANYTHING. Get busy! 😉

I know how it feels to have everything collapse around you.
You are trying to change yourself by your strength alone- but that’s the problem.

Let God control you and change your life - Without His Strength you can do absolutely nothing.

Even in the midst of the darkest storms of your life and you feel like everyone has left you: Jesus is always with you. It’s not just a cliché, you’ve got to believe this.

Be still and know that I am God.
  • Psalm 46:10
There are steps you need to take to be renewed with God:
  1. **Say this prayer **and also your personal prayer to God and really mean it with you heart:

Lord Jesus, I come before you just as I am. I am sorry for my sins. I repent of my sins, please forgive me. In your name I forgive all others for what they have done against me. I renounce satan, the evil spirits and all their works. I give you my entire self, Lord Jesus, now and forever. I invite you into my life, Jesus. I accept you as my Lord, God and Saviour. Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul and spirit.
Come, Lord Jesus, cover me with your precious blood, and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I Love You, Lord Jesus. I Praise You, Jesus. I Thank You, Jesus. I shall follow you every day of my life. Amen.

(Fr. Rookey Miracle Prayer: frrookeyicm.org/home)
  1. Examine your conscience, write all your sins on a sheet of paper. Ask the Holy Spirit to
reveal all that you have done and humble yourself to God asking Him to take control of
    your life.
  2. Have a FULL Confession with no holding back on past hurts - Let yourself go!
Talk to your confessor about the problems you are facing and be open with him, this is
a time to clean out all that needs to be thrown out. Rip apart, burn, or throw out your
sheet of sins and promise God that you will let go of the past and move on forward with
    Him.
  3. Sincerely do your Penance, and go to an adoration Chapel any time you are free and
just let your feelings go to Jesus and ask Him sincerely to take control of your life -
while you are there, know that the Blessed Mother loves you so much and will lead you
to her son - she will always be there for you. Reach out to her saying the Rosary and
ask for her intercession and guidance.
  4. When you get Home - Ask the **Holy Spirit **to control your actions and the words you
say. You will face a lot of adversity and difficulties with your family but you will
control that with the help of the Holy Spirit. Love them anyways even if they say
something against you. Do not go back to your old ways of addiction. You are
becoming new in Christ. Help with chores to this best of your abilities
and be **humble **and kind to others - Your humility will lead you closer to God.
  5. Every night - talk to your Heavenly Father and have your own **personal prayer **with Him.
He will tell you of what you have to do.
  6. *People make mistakes *- and your Father in Heaven knows that we fall with human
frailty. Avoid temptations and make a weekly/2 week schedule for confession.
  7. Whenever you need guidance and support: **Open the Bible **and you will find your
answers. A good spiritual guide and priest can also talk to you in your hard times.
  8. Offer all your pain and suffering to the Lord. For He will make you Stronger through your
weaknesses. **Pray for those **who have hurt you - and offer your pain and suffering to
Jesus for the peace and souls of you and your family.
  9. Repeat and do these steps as often as you are able to - and I PROMISE YOU,
miracles will occur in your life. Cast all your anxieties and weaknesses to God. God
will take care of all your needs, whether it is finding a job, lack of love, feeling weak,
    everything!
It’s not just a cliché.

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
  • 1 Peter 5:10
Keeping you in my prayers, God is with you!

OP, what professional experience do you have? Could you name at least two areas in which you feel you’re particularly talented?

I bet a lot of people here might have some good suggestions for you. While you’re no doubt trying to **find **a job (as in, finding someone who will hire you), have you considered **creating **a job (self-employment)? Are there any particular roadblocks you’re encountering?

I’m starting to think this was an invitation to a pity party.

This is a really tough one,and I understand because I been there done that…

no one can tell you what to do… but if there is no communication of any value…

and there is no intimacy at all…not one speck of it…

and it’s a long deceased relationship , beyond the point of no life…

I could suggest you both call it a day… but don’t just walk away,

you really should do what I and many others never did…

speak to someone about it, if not the wife, then someone…don’t keep it bottled up…
