Fair Use, Powerpoint, and Images

Hi,
For a powerpoint presentation for class, my professor wants us to use “lots of pictures”. I am almost positive she would not be pleased with lots of clip art images.

Would copy and pasting images from google onto my powerpoint constitute fair use since the pictures are being used for educational purposes?

If the images are not copyrighted, then they are fair game.

However, sometimes copyrighted images are copied and posted on websites without being noted as being copyrighted…so you have to be a little careful.

E-mail the copyright owner of the picture and ask permission. Tell them what you’re doing. In my experience, most people are happy to give permission to students doing school projects (which doesn’t mean that you should just assume that you have permission already, though), and if you are asked later on, you can produce the written permissions to use the images, and you can also include a notation in your bibliography to show what the images are, the web sites they came from and the name of the person who gave you permission to use it.)

Another thought would be to make your own drawings and then scan them or digitally photograph them.

That said, the advice I give my students is that they are probably safe using copyrighted images in something they’re doing for class. I believe that falls within fair use guidelines.

However, if they are planning to use that same work in a presentation at a conference or in an article they are writing, they need copyright-free images, permission from the copyright holder, or they need to create their own.

Why would it be wrong to use copyrighted pictures for an assignment?
If they are availible on google images, then it doesn’t matter either way.
It’s not like your making money off other peoples stuff. If you need to
use a ton of pictures for a powerpoint, then it would be silly to think
that you have to email the originator of the pictures. Just don’t claim
that any of the pictures are one’s you took cause that’s plagerism.

As an artist myself, with copyrighted works available for viewing on the Web, I always like to know how my work is being used.

There are very few circumstances where I would refuse to grant permission for using them, but at the same time, I would consider it a courtesy, if people let me know that they are using the images, and what they are using them for. It helps me know what kind of things people are attracted to, and which direction I should move in my art.
