The evil one has you in his sights. You can only find the strength to win this battle through the trinity. Ask for help from them and ask saints to pray for you.

Thank you all for your responses! I will definitely keep them all in my thoughts during those dark moments when I feel God’s absence.

Have you tried melatonin before you go to bed? It really works for me and got me through a rough period of waking up with anxiety. It was always between 3-4 a.m. for me, too, and as others have mentioned there is a biological reason for that. Magnesium and potassium are essential too, so make sure you have a good diet and good sleep habits.

Other than the physical, as others have also mentioned, the Rosary helps tremendously. I’ve heard Our Lady referred to as Our Lady of Good Sleep, and this comforts me a lot. It was our mothers who rocked us to sleep when we were children! If I don’t fall back to sleep saying the Rosary (90% of the time), I assume God woke me up to pray for someone, so I offer it up.

I’ve also found that lack of sleep for a short period is not the end of the world. On those draggy mornings when you just want to go back to bed, mind over matter works. On days I think will be horrible because I’ve had no sleep, I often am surprised that things were just fine. My point is, when you wake up at 3:00 and feel anxious, just don’t sweat it. It will be ok!

I don’t think in my case it has to do with any sleeping disorder. I think Oscarletts and (quite a few others) comments about it being a psychological issue magnified by knowing that most of the world is unconscious/ asleep while I’m awake makes me afraid that death is a fully unconscious state and heaven/hell are illusions.

Strangely, these thoughts usually go away when the world wakes up again. 🙂 I was curious to see if other Catholics deal with this phenomenon and how. On the plus side, it’s New Year’s Eve so I’m sure many will be up tonight.

When my son was having trouble with this, it really helped him to pray the night prayers from the office of the hours.

Here is a link to tonight’s.

Here is an example from it. The entire thing is worth it, for peace during the night.

GOSPEL CANTICLE

Ant. Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake, we may keep watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in his peace.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Let us pray.

Lord,
we beg you to visit this house
and banish from it
all the deadly power of the enemy.
May your holy angels dwell here
to keep us in peace,
and may your blessing be upon us always.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
– Amen.

“The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke tell us that Jesus died during the “the ninth hour.” In modern calculation this would be 3 p.m. According to this idea, Satan then flips the symbolism on its head by taking for himself 3 a.m., in direct mockery of God.”

(From article in post I am replying to.)

Eep.

I actually don’t have this issue of 3 AM stuff. When I wake up I usually can go back to sleep. Maybe it’s because I eat a lot of protein.
But, I do get the doubts. Usually I reason myself out of them. That gets annoying when I’m positing for and against arguments against myself, but ah well. But usually they just keep on coming. The best thing I think is to pray for an increase in Faith. “I believe, Lord, help my unbelief”. Perhaps think on times when you have been in God’s Presence if this has happened to you personally.

Try to pray the Rosary every day at least five decades.

But if you keep waking up at 3 AM specifically, look into praying in Jesus’ Name that all spirits not of the Holy Spirit is washed at the foot of the Cross in the Blood of Christ.
You can also pray the Invitatory of the Liturgy of the Hours.
