Jesus commissioned the apostles to preach the gospel to all creation & that those who would believe & be baptized would be saved. He didn’t say that everyone’s personal guesswork on bible verses is the way to figure out christian doctrine & practice, including the relation of faith & salvation. Which is why he didn’t commission the apostles to go out, write, publish, & distribute the bible so every man, woman & child could make his own guesses on bible verses in order to determine truth. If the bible were the source of teachings then the first nine generations or so of Christians would have been out of luck as the bible wasn’t codified till 392 or so.
And since nowhere does the bible claim to have a detailed exposition of the gospel as preached by Sts Paul, Peter, John etc, it is futile to attempt to determine by scriptural exegesis what this gospel is that was preached. The bible is not a catechism, it is a narrative of salvation history and is also a witness to and attests to church teachings, but not the source. The word of God is more than just what is written, it is part of Divine Revelation, not the whole.
If one wants to determine truth on faith & salvation, one has to go to the church, the pillar & foundation of truth, and its teachings, not the bible as it is not clear on anything, even the divinity of Christ (the 8 million worldwide Jehovah’s Witnesses who deny Christ’s divinity testify to that). Church teachings will clarify the definition of faith, what salvation is, what we are saved from and how to obtain this salvation.
One works off of a false premise if s/he thinks the gospel as preached by the apostles, and what follows from it on various points, can be derived by scriptural exegesis. That is not what the apostles taught and they learned from Jesus himself.
