We watched the Frontline production “John Paul II: The Millennial Pope”. In it there were several references to a difference between “faith” and “belief”. I didn’t quite understand what those interviewed were referring to. Can anybody help out here? How are faith and belief different?

I am just guessing a little since I didn’t hear all of what they said, but to me faith means the gift of grace that we receive from God - our faith is God’s gift to us. Belief is something you arrive at a conclusion on, on your own, through your own free will.

Your beliefs mayor may not influence your actions (“I believe in God, said the murderer”), while true faith in your soul changes the actions you take and the way you are - it drives you to full sanctification to glorify God.

Example: A man dying of starvation may look at a plate of food and say “I believe this food will make me live” but unless he actually eats it, he will die. Faith is the action people take based on their beliefs.

In the divinely inspired, inerrant Greek of the New Testament, there is no difference whatever between “faith” and “belief” (pistis)

It is interesting to note that the Apostle John NEVER uses the nouns “faith” or “belief” - to him, faith/belief is always a VERB (pisteuo)!!

(Nonetheless, it must be admitted that in contemporary English, “to believe” is substantially weaker than “to have faith”. As in response to some query, “I believe so…”, meaning merely, “I feel/think so…”)

I went to the dictionary before posting hoping to find a distinct definition such as:
Belief: Conclusions or inferences drawn from observed or related facts known or believed to be true.
Faith: Statements of fact believed solely on the basis of trust placed in those who have stated them to be true, without supporting or tangible irrefutable evidence.

I didn’t find such a distinction in my dictionary. So for me belief is as stated in my definition posted above and FAITH is/are those facts revealed by First Angels In The Heavens or believed when revealed by someone we trust to truly love us. For me Faith is a belief acquired through Love, who is God, through the infusions and stirrings of the Holy Soirit within us.

To me (for me), to “believe” is a cognitive process that brings one to a conclusion based on concrete and observable evidence. The question of what constitutes “evidence” may clearly vary from person to person. For example, a Christian (or other “believer”) may look around at nature, ponder the celestial heavens, etc., and accept that as evidence that a diety (God for me) is a reality and that is evidence supporting that idea. An atheist may observe the very same things and conclude cognitively that is not evidence of anything except the universe exists (assuming, of course, he/she doesn’t believe it is simply an illusion). So, in the end, belief is to a greater or lesser degree a very subjective process. One “believes” what one believes. Consensus on the validity of a belief is not a necessary element of whether or not ones belief can be regarded as a belief.

Faith, on the other hand requires no such evidence and at least on some level may actually amount to a simple “choice.” This could be very true for someone in the early stages of conversion. My thought is based on the fundamental concept that God is constantly drawing everyone to Himself. I believe a “choice” to exercise faith may simply be an affirmative response by an individual to that without an awareness that God is the source of the choice. In this case, of course, we could say that even this sort of rudimentary “faith” is a gift from God. At some point, hopefully, the individual grows in the experience of a faith community and begins to receive the gifts and affirmations that lead to and foster authentic beliefs. Referring, for example, back to my previous comments on “evidence,” the individual comes to a point where he/she accepts the experiences of the universe as evidence of God’s creation and God the Creator.

This is how it comes together for me. For others? Who knows? Pray for an increase in “faith,” but in the meantime make a “choice” to have faith that God is real. A nurtured faith can lead to real “belief.”
