If you’re falling asleep in church, but doing your best to stay awake, does it fulfill your Sunday obligation?

If it does not, what if it happens on the last Mass of the weekend?

That depends on why you are falling asleep, and for how long you are asleep- and for what part of the Mass you are asleep.

Oh heavens, sometimes people fall asleep - can’t be helped if you’ve slept poorly the night before!

St Therese the Little Flower used to fall asleep during Divine Office sometimes - bet you she probably fell asleep in Mass too on occasion.

Don’t sit. Stand. Liturgy is much more beautiful and you will be much more attentive if you stand the entire liturgy. That’s what my wife and I do.

Hello,

This reminds me of a funny story. There was a man who perpetual fell asleep during Mass, and when he did he tended to snore. What was worse is that he sat in the very first pew. This just annoyed the Priest, so he thought up a scheme to try and get him to stay awake.

The following Sunday during the homily, sure enough the man was sound asleep in the front pew. So at the end of his homily the Priest very quietly said “I am going to take a poll. Now all of you who are going to Heaven please remain seated.” And everyone remained seated. The Priest then said “Now all of you who are going to HELL stand up!”

The sleeping man was abruptly awakened and bolted up out of his seat. He looked around and saw everyone was still sitting. He turned to the Priest and said “I guess it’s just you and me Pastor.” 😃
