First off, I know that the Sacred Scriptures are the Word of God, and I deeply revere and reverence them for that. I have a problem reading the scriptures though. I get bored or just dont know how to read it. I want to love the scriptures and know them like other people for the Lord, but I dont know how too. Please help!

It depends on how what you’re reading. If you start from Genesis and try to read straight through, you’ll likely be stopped dead by the middle of Leviticus. But, if you can survive through Chronicles, you can survive anything. 😛

Also, stay away from the Douay-Rheims as the language can be difficult for modern readers (stick with the RSV or NAB).

I might suggest reading the “action packed” parts of the Gospel, like when Jesus tells the Scribes and Pharisees where they can go.

Or try Lectio Divina (Link1) (Link2) (Link3) (Link4)

One book that gave me new insights on the Scriptures was Scott Hahn’s Letter and Spirit.

I would suggest joining a good Bible study group – if there is one in your parish.
If there isn’t one, you might try picking up some Bible study materials and doing them on your own. A good one to begin with would be “Our Father’s Plan” (Scot Hahn and Jeff Cavins). Take your time doing it (a few years if need be), and do it with Our Lord. By that I mean, ask Him to be with you as your ponder the questions; when you don’t understand something, ask Him what it means; be patient with yourself and with God–He might not answer for awhile!

Also, you might consider using the Liturgy of Hours for prayer. It costs quite a bit to buy the set, but it is worth it. I bought it (20 years ago or more) and started using it for prayer primarily because I was interested in the writings of the early Church fathers which is part of the Office of Readings. But after several years, it was/is the Psalms I came to love (where before they were not a part of Scripture I tended to read).

This is one of the most frequently discussed matters on this website, and that’s great.

We all should read scripture all our lives. The Jews read and study the Torah in their Synagogues, on a three-year cycle. That would be chiefly the first five books of the Bible, but they also study all the other Jewish books in their version of the scriptures.

Post #3 had some good advice.

You know, for beginners, you might want to start off with some of the SHORT books in the Bible – because it’s easier to get through them and a relevant commentary.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Biblical Institute wrote a lengthly document called the Interpretation of the Bible in the church, back around 1993. They said basically the same thing I said in the previous paragraph – read the bible with a commentary nearby to help you understand more about the scripture.

The problem some say is that there are excellent Catholic commentaries, but they are for scholars and they are in Latin. So, there’s a new wave of commentaries trying to bridge the gap between those technical books and us ordinary Catholics.

Even still, you can run into a lot of commentaries which might give you the same headache they give me – they’re always talking about who wrote the book, when was it written, and otherwise discussing a lot of technical issues. That’s a problem, too. You might get discouraged because you wonder how anybody can make any sense of the scripture at all. The commentaries might talk a lot about “problems” with what’s in the scripture – apparent contradictions, translation problems, etc.

But, don’t be discouraged. You simply might not want to dwell on all those issues right now.

However old you are, get started and don’t give up. Scripture wasn’t written just for the experts, it was written for you and me.

I haven’t found all the answers in any one book. As much as my bank account and my slow reading allows, I pick up more books to look at the same scriptures, over and over.

I’m constantly learning more and more about Genesis, for example.

It’s not so hard my friend. Try reading the Gospels with a view to learning all you can about this person Jesus that they speak of. Think about how that all read to the people of the early church reading it for the first time.

Reading the OT is much the same way. I love most of it because it’s full of drama and in some cases things strange to me. Read about King David in the books of Samuel and then the books of Maccabees where the heroic Jews were fighting to throw off the Greeks. There’s some almost Sci-fi stuff going on in there!

I love the book of Ecclesiastes when I need to kinda get my perspective squared away, as well as the books of Tobit and Sirach.

The Bible is anything but boring my friend. 🙂

All good responses so far. I would add that you ask the HS to fill you with HUNGER for the Word.

Also, I don’t know what your prayer devotions are like, but I enjoy the Liturgy of the Hours. This has the scriptures embedded with the daily prayers and they are all arranged according to liturgical themes.

I also highly recommend the audio bible. I have both CD’s and MP3’s. I like to listen to them while I am doing chores, driving, and getting ready for bed.

What works for each person is very individual, so you can take the suggestions here and experiement to see what works for you.

And one last point, Satan knows that Scripture is one of your best spiritual weapons (remember what Jesus did when He was tempted). For that reason he will try everything to prevent you from going forward, so pray the prayer of St. Michael the Archangel as I will also for you.

just keep going, you will eventually love it. make sure you only read authorised versions though because the others are the work of the devil. Just keep going and pray to the virgin mary for help, like the scriptures instruct

I find a great way to appreciate the Scriptures is to focus more on the quality of the reading rather than the quantity. sometimes we get so caught up in how much we have read rather than what it is we actually read. I like to randomly open up my Bible and search and find a verse that speaks to me in that particular moment. just one mans opinion.
