Can someone help me understand what is meant by false compassion and give me some examples?

TIA. šŸ™‚

To see someone making a mistake that would hurt them, but instead of warning them, just listening to them in a compassionate way. Some people have the mistaken notion that they don’t want to jeopardize their friendship and be the messenger of bad news. So they allow their friend to make a bad mistake instead.

Or to sympathize with a person about the wrong they did taking their side instead of telling them the truth. They don’t want to get involved for fear it may cost them something.

never heard of it, can you put it in context? only thing that comes to mind is james? ā€˜if you see someone in need, and you wish them well, and say, keep warm and stay well, but you don’t offer them your cloak or food, how does this help them?’

False compassion is pretending that you care about people when what you really want is to make everyone in your own image.

Religious people show false compassion when they propose that TRUE mercy is making everyone accept their religious code of morality before offering them food, shelter, medicine, dignity, love.

Secular people show false compassion when they propose that TRUE mercy is making everyone abide by their secular code of ethics before offering them food, shelter, medicine, dignity, love.

True mercy is demonstrated by our Father in heaven, who makes the sun to rise on the evil and and on the good, and sends rain upon the just and the unjust–because, if you love only those who love you, what are you doing that is so special? Everyone loves to be loved. And if you are friendly towards only those you identify with, have you gone the extra mile? Even the mafia does that. Instead, be compassionate as God is compassionate. That is true compassion.

False compassion is aiding, abetting, approving, or recommending someone else’s sin so that way you don’t offend them.

A woman has an affair with a married man, and the false compassionate one says ā€œhe needs to leave his wife and 3 kids and be with youā€

A man who steals from his employer, and the falsely compassionate one says ā€œyeah, he doesn’t pay you enough man!ā€

They tell the one who is in the wrong, what they want to hear, so they can avoid confronting them on the moral issue.

False compassion can also be when you hesitate to ā€œspeak the truth in loveā€ if a person is living a sinful lifestyle - caring more for their short-term ā€œhappinessā€ than the destination of their eternal soul. Granted, there are complexities - you have to take the right approach, and you have to figure out how to approach difficult subjects without scaring the person off. But nowadays you see people bending over backwards to ā€œbe supportiveā€ of people making choices that should be considered insupportable. 😦

To me, false compassion is when someone attempts to convince themselves and or others that they care for someone, but their actions demonstrate otherwise. An example would be when people parent out of guilt, and they say they don’t want to disrespect or alienate their kids when the truth is that they are scared about how they will feel if their kids throw a fit.

I think there are different modes or senses of false compassion.

One is, for example, to care about hurting another’s feelings at the cost of them losing their soul.

A second example which is fairly similar is to have regard for someone’s physical well-being but lesser regard or no regard for their eternal destiny.

I’m sure ā€œfalse compassionā€ can be thought of in multiple ways.

Euthanasia is the best example of false compassion.
People justify it by calling it ā€œmercy killingā€. There’s nothing merciful about it.
