I hate to brag. I don’t care what people think of me or my accomplishments. I know that all glory goes to God, not I. However, I suffer from “Reverse Pride”, or False Humility.

When people ask me questions I often tell them things such as “I’m not worthy”, or other similar things. I often hesitate to tell people that people often compliment me for being a nice person (I get this a lot at work by the customers who I always say hello to :)).

I suppose the best way to end “false humility” is to just tell them how it is and not put yourself down. 🤷

I won’t even try to comment because only time and maturity are the answer. Peace.

I’m not sure I agree that what you are describing actually constitutes false humility, but if you are concerned about that, the solution is easy. “False humility” is actually just a form of pride, and the cure for pride is gratitude. If someone compliments you, say “Thank you, and then express gratitude toward someone else.”

Ex,
“You did great on that assignment.”
“Thanks, I really enjoyed reading that book.”
“I love the way you play.”
“Thanks. It’s great to be able to work with such great musicians.”
“You’re so well-mannered.”
“Thanks. My sainted granny always told me to treat others the way you wish to be treated.”
“Good job on that thing you did!”
“Thanks. It was a team effort.”
“I love your tie!”
“Thanks. I like yours too.”

You get the idea.

Best definition of humility I’ve ever heard is “not to think less of yourself, but to think of yourself less.”

If you’ve ever read C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters” you find an interesting dichotomy. Satan always attempts to get one to look inward. (i.e. what will this do for me, how will this make me look better in the eyes or the estimation of others.) Christ on the other hand tries to get one to look outward. “Do unto others…, love your neighbor… whatever you do for others, you do for me… and so much more.”

False humility just might be more like listening to Uncle Screwtape ???:banghead:

Shalom

We don’t need to put ourselves down. Just acknowledge the Lord’s grace that aids us to make right choices. Without Him I can do nothing.

Well said, and I love “The Screwtape Letters.”
