FAM- pregnancy chances

Hi,

After using FAM-Billings for one year, I’d thought my cycle was easy to read. For the past year, ovulation has occurred on days 17-21, day 19 being the most usual. Today, however, peak mucous showed up on day 12- 5 days earlier than most cycles. DH and I were intimate on Day 8- my CM was very light and tacky. What are the chances of pregnancy? The other three times I’ve conceived were on the day of ovulation or within a day or two.

I don’t think anyone here is going to be able to answer that for you.

Modern NFP techniques require monitoring symptoms on a daily basis for the most accurate use, not counting days and relying on historical charts - which has been proven to be inconsistent (as you are seeing now).

Just curious as I am out of touch with the details of current NFP models…so do all NFP methods then recommend abstaining until after ovulation has been confirmed?

I’d say the chances are pretty small of pregnancy occurring since it’s been 4 days and it was only light and tacky ( not the ideal for sperm survival).

I would agree with this. I have read that with no mucus, sperm can survive only a few hours; and with the best mucus, sperm can survive up to three to five days. On day 8 you say you had some mucus, but maybe not the best mucus for sperm survival. So I would say that there is a chance you could be pregnant, but I would guess not a very large chance. Only God knows. May God bless you and your husband either way.

I think some have a ‘dry day’ rule, where if there is no cm on a given day then it is ok. However, this is still more risky than waiting until after ovulation has been confirmed.

Thanks for the responses. I usually follow the dry day rule. Day 8 is usually dry for me. I’m pretty conservative in what I consider fertile. I was a little surprised I wasn’t dry that day, but didn’t think too much of it until this morning. We’re avoiding indefinitely because of several factors. Another baby would complicate things a bit.

The “most conservative” use for most methods is to abstain until after ovulation, yes.
There are plenty of “rules” that each unique method uses to address the time prior to ovulation, but those are all creeping into the “less conservative” uses…
