We have a new employee at work. She’s a lovely African-American woman. Today while making small talk, she shared that she practices “Candomble.” In turn, I shared that I’m a practicing Roman Catholic. It was brought to my attention that there are Catholics who practice Candomble. I’d never heard of it until this afternoon. Is anyone here familiar with it…? Thank you, my friends.

I did a little research since I was curious and from what I read I doubt a Catholic in full communion could practice Candomblé. This is from Wikipedia:
Practitioners of Candomblé believe in one all powerful God called Oludumaré, who is served by lesser deities, which are called orishas.[1][a] Candomblé practitioners believe that every person has their own individual orisha which controls his or her destiny and acts as a protector.
Obviously these beliefs are heretical and couldn’t be held by a faithful Catholic. However, apparently many believers would claim to be Catholic when asked about their faith because Candomblé was a hidden religion. Perhaps this is how Catholicism and this practice became “connected”.

This article was very interesting:

In May of this year a judge in Brazil found that Candomblé is not a religion.

Thanks so much for your research, I appreciate it. If possible, could you please add Elizabeth to your prayer list…? I certainly have. 🙂
