Family (catholic) friend just got divorced. Was married in a civil ceremony initially. What now for him?

I’m pretty sure such a marriage was an invalid marriage in the eyes of the Church. However, I am not sure he go ahead and marry again in the catholic church without an annulment?

Thanks in advance.

To marry in the Church, he needs a decree of nullity from the Church regarding his first marriage, which should be a simple lack of form case. He also needs to make a good confession and pursue the proper marriage prep for a Catholic marriage.

Well there is not enough information. In a mixed marriage a Catholic can be dispensed to marry in a non Catholic ceremony such as a civil one. So just because he married civilly , it does not automatically indicate invalidity.

The best course of action is for your friend to go to confession and then to make an appointment with his pastor to discuss his marital status.

Marriage law in the church can be complex, best to direct him to his pastor.
