As a board game enthusiast, I could not let this thread go without posting. 🙂
I would recommend you start with this site: www.boardgamegeek.com
It can be a bit overwhelming, but it has information on many differenct board and card games along with descriptions, recommended ages, play time, reviews, pictures and ratings based on a large number of users.

Try starting with this link:
boardgamegeek.com/familygames/browse/boardgame
It’s a listing of the top 100 rated family games.
Check for recommended ages for any that look interesting.

My personal recommendations would be (in order of increasing complexity):
Incan Gold: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37759/incan-gold
Dixit: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37759/incan-gold
Carcassonee: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne
Settlers of Catan: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/the-settlers-of-catan
Ticket to Ride boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9209/ticket-to-ride

Best wishes to you in starting up a family game night!
If you enjoy these, I’m happy to give more recommendations.

I just finished playing Apples to Apples Junior version with grandsons ages 6, 8, 11 and their parents–we all had a blast. They ask to play this all the time.

Pictionary is good, but so are card games. Our kids like Dread Pirate, too; there is both luck and some strategy. For the younger kids, Sorry.

Stratego, checkers, mancala, and chess have the disadvantage that only two can play, but it’s good to start kids on chess fairly young. If you wait too long, people think it is an intelligence test instead of a game.

Don’t forget that the nine-year old and the two-year can be a team against two other siblings, too.

Yes to BGG, it’s a terrific game resource.

My youngest child is 20, but we still have a scream playing Parcheesi at the beach!

Is Mouse Trap still around? The only thing is the choking hazards, but aside from that I remember it being quite fun. Same with Connect Four and Shift Tac Toe. ( yes, I grew up in the 90s).

Lol, mouse trap, did anyone actually play that as a board game? I think we would just build it and set it off over and over again. 😃

Dominos is a good one, (the mexican train rules are a fun family game). I also recommend card games. Uno, and skipbo are really good. Crazy 8’s (with regular cards, or aggravation pagat.com/invented/aggravation.html for a longer more involved game. Hearts, or even Go Fish, War, or the variation of slapping the doubles for a more lively game play. 😃

For board games, I would suggest Sorry!, Trouble, Yahtzee, Life (since you little kids like to help, but don’t need to play, Clue, Hungry Hungry Hippos 😉 Or some of those other fun little kid games, like the fishing, Hi ho Cherry O! etc.
