Well, for the most part, this show has been one of my guilty pleasures…disrespectful on several levels, and way too much sexual innuendo, but still better than South Park, I suppose…as far as guilty pleasure programming is concerned…

But for any other members here who also enjoy Family Guy, I gotta ask about last night’s show…it was a tough one to swallow for my family.

I would have appreciated it more satirically, I suppose, if they had shown Lois’ position to be the other polar extreme to that reflected of the moral position, but that final speech of hers was way too middle of the road for me and I am concerned with what the youth who watch this show regularly will come away with.

My two teens are pro-abstinence, of course. They laughed at several of the parts, but they mostly dealt with their jaws dropping at others - as they found them as insulting as we did. We all agreed it will push our efforts to teach chastity to the kids back a couple of notches (my two help with the high school religious ed classes).

I’m curious to see if my two can find a way to use this very popular show to get across the proper message. I’m a firm believer in making lemonade out of lemons (or that everything created comes from God, we just sometimes have to dust off the soil when pulling it up from the ground)…so as much as I enjoy the show overall, and as disappointed I am in this particular episode, there’s got to be a way to use it to our advantage…

Any ideas?

I love Family Guy - I think it’s totally hillarious. Totally irrevrent and sassy, but just very very funny. I don’t think kids need to see it, however.

Can you give some detail on the episode last night? I missed it.

From the website:

When Lois discovers that Chris has some bad information about sex, she volunteers to teach a sex-ed class at the high school. After Lois upsets the other parents with her honest approach, Principal Shepherd (guest voice Gary Cole) is forced to replace her with Reverend Jerry Kirkwood (guest voice David Cross). Meanwhile, Meg and her new guy take an abstinence pledge, but still manage to find a loophole. And a terrified Stewie sets a series of traps for the Tooth Fairy, hell-bent on destroying him in the “Prick Up Your Ears” episode

The show had me at “I didn’t know Optimus Prime was Jewish!”
Didn’t see last night’s however.

Well I’ve watched all the seasons so far, and it seems to me this season is the most in-your-face sexual of the bunch. It used to be 2 or three episodes had a couple of no-hold-barred scenes about sex, but this season it seems every episode has at least 2 scenes and some episodes are 75% sex themed. I mean there have always been the sexual innuendos and undercurrent but lately that’s been removed and I think it’s a shame.

I suspect it will be the beginning of the end for the show if they keep it up, but I’m hoping they’ll tweak it back down several notches rather than let that happen.

My favorite Peter quotes…

“Lois, I know you’re a feminist and I think that’s adorable. But it’s grown up time now and I’m the man.”

“Women are not people, they are devices built by our Lord Jesus Christ for our entertainment.”

I also love the episode where the pope is sleeping and someone comes to wake him up and he’s all cranky because he doesn’t want to wear his pope hat and clean up his clothes on the floor. May be sacraligious, but oh so funny!

I still get a kick from the Osama Bin Laden opening with Stewie…

I don’t think it’s going down. How many shows have ever been brought back solely by popular demand?

However, right now sexual issues are at the core of a lot of debate in our society. Family Guy isn’t well known for pointing out exactly why it makes a certain joke, it really expects the audience to just get it. But I’d wager it has something to do with that.

Yes. I don’t know how I feel about the Catholic jokes. Namely the one about Jesus being drunk 24/7. Oh well! 😃

My soon to be 15 year old son begs to be able to watch this show “because all his friends do.” We’ve said no. Although we’ve not personally seen it.

Do you think he’s old enough?

(We’ve just recently let him watch the Simpsons because we thought it was too trashy)

Maybe I’ve answered my own question.

If they ever make a joke I disagree with, and they and a lot of other people do, I have three ways of dealing with it, each coming into play if the other fails.

A. Since they make fun of everything, I don’t take it personally.
B. If it’s a show that doesn’t make fun of everything but has a focus for the taunting, I just chalk it up to a joke.
C. If all else fails, I treat it like the opinions of anyone else; I don’t get offended, because I just don’t do that. I’m very hard to offend. Jon Stewart took a few good shots at Democrats, who I usually vote for, on the election night special and I didn’t mind. They were funny.

Speaking of TV comedy, did anyone catch Stephen Colbert’s total meltdown on that show? That was classic, I thought I was never going to start breathing again.

Well, my 11, 13, and 15 YO DS all watch and have all watched for about 2 years now.

It’s funny, and it’s disrespectful. It’s a way to let off steam.

We watched last night’s show, and today while driving all my boys home from school talked about last night’s show. (they brought it up).

I made a comment about it not sending the right message, and my ever so brilliant 13 year old said “Who in their right mind would take a life message from ‘Family Guy’? It’s FUNNY!! But not serious.” My other boys agreed and reaffirmed what we’ve taught them.

They are getting the 4th season DVD set for Christmas this year. (They already own the others).

You’re pretty dismissive of something you haven’t seen. Every fifteen year old has differing levels of maturity, but you shouldn’t judge the show on what you hear.

I’m a sucker for Robot Chicken. SOOO funny
Me too! And I always get suckered into “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”, even though for the life of me I cannot figure out half of what Meatwad says.

Have you seen Metalocalypse? I think it’s on Adult Swim on Sunday night. I caught one episode and found it to be perfectly inane and hilarious.

And you’re being pretty judgemental of someone you don’t know.

I didn’t say no to my son because of the show necessarily - (because I haven’t seen the show) … I said no because of his level of maturity.

Maybe the show is harmless though… what do I know? THAT’S why I asked.

Thanks to the poster who said her kids watch it… and it’s no big deal. Maybe I will reconsider - after I watch it first.
