DH and I just moved, and we’re expecting some family members to come by for DS’s birthday party. At first, we thought it was just the in-laws, but my mom has told me that two of my aunts would like to attend, too.

We have one extra bed and one queen-sized air mattress. (I’m thinking DH’s mom can have the bed and my parents can share the air mattress).

We only have one sofa bed left, which would be fine for one of my aunts, but both of my aunts have physical problems (bad hip, walks with a cane).

All (except my parents) are on a fixed income, so I couldn’t ask any of them (except my parents, of course) to get a hotel.

Any ideas? Should we buy another air mattress (although it may prove difficult for the aunt who’d be using it)? Should DH and I give up our bed for the weekend and take an extra air mattress (I’m all for it, but I don’t think DH would be willing to give up his bed)…

What do you do to “board” visitors?

Was always taught to give up my room and bed so I am like you and would no problem giving up my bed for one night. DH and I somewhat differ on that subject as well. Unless you pay for the aunts a hotel or let them suffer for one night knowing clearly they have physical aliments I don’t really think there is another option.
Maybe one aunt can sleep with Dh’s mom on that bed, depending on how big the bed is?
How old is DS? If he is a toddler than daddy could always sleep with him for the night and one of your aunts could have his spot on the bed. Or he could sleep in the bed with you and dad and aunt could use his bed. Or you could build DS a special fort made of blankets, pillows, and fun stuff and he could sleep in that for the night.

If it comes down to an elderly and infirm person having an air mattress they couldn’t easily navigate or a resident of the house giving up a bed, the choice is obvious. If your son is old enough to have a bed he can give to the aunt, the aunt gets his bed. If not, she gets yours. If your bed is big enough, you could offer to have the two aunts share your bed and you two take the sofa bed. If not, you take the floor.

Wow! Thanks! I can’t believe I missed the obvious…

Yes, my son can give up his bed. He does have an air mattress that he could use. Thanks again!
