Family Movie Night

No, I’ve never been part of a parish or school that did this.

I was too old, but after one of our moves the public elementary school my younger siblings went to had family movie nights several times per year. They used a projector set up in the gym. Films were generally newer, out of theaters but before home video release (remember when that took a while?) I think they did it as a PTA fundraiser.

Movie nights are pretty common around here for recreation departments, too. Lots of summer movies at the park after dark (especially around the Fourth of July.)

The KOC is having their first one this Saturday night. I can’t go, but I hope it goes well! 🍿

Our daughter’s Catholic school has done this a couple of times.

They watched the Peanuts movie and ate popcorn, pizza and drinks.

Unfortunately, my daughter got in the car and said “everyone has a phone/ipad/etc but me and it’s not fair” so I don’t know how much she got out of the movie!

Ours does a couple times a year. We haven’t gone yet because the timing hasn’t worked out but hope we will eventually.

I know one parish in South Florida that has family night movies every Friday of the week.

Mine does, but it’s always some secular (PG) movie. I wish they had more Catholic movies instead.

Yeah, there are a lot of parishes in South Florida (esp in areas with snowbirds and retirees) that do lots of social activities

I can’t imagine this works. People will freak out on some movies that others think is fine…

I think that Family Movie Night is fine as long as they don’t show a film that has Illuminati/occult symbolism or a film that promotes immoral values.

My Parish does this monthly, it’s always a family friendly film.

Would movies like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins work?
Those should be fine. Ours normally does Disney movies. Since there’s no obligation to attend, I’ve never heard any complaints.

We haven’t gone ourselves but that’s because of timing, not content.

Which Disney movies do they show? Some have Illuminati/occult symbolism or promote an immoral agenda. If they can show The Sound of Music, should they be able to show other movies about the Third Reich in order to educate children?

They can show whatever they want. No one is required to attend at all.

But to answer the question, Finding Nemo is the last one that I remember. Coincided with the release of Finding Dory.

I would like to know if they are going to show Frozen or have shown Frozen.
I don’t know. I don’t follow it that closely. And I’m not involved with the group that decides what to show. We also have the film at home so it wouldn’t register as something that my kids might want to go to church to see.
