The death penalty is an archaic method of dealing with criminals who kill. It’s use is unjust and unfair, largely dependent on the quality of the attorney defending the case as well as the state or county in which the crime was committed.

It is also a huge waste of money. Every death penalty case has close to limitless appeals. As most of the defendants have no way of paying an attorney for those appeals, the state must pay for that attorney. The state must also pay for the attorney to argue against the appeal. Given that many death penalty case go on for 10-15-20 years in many states, this little exercise costs millions. Far more money than to house an inmate for the rest of his life.
If imprisoned they can kill inmates
Death row inmate are kept separate from the general population. According to what I understand of your thought process here, they would be killing inmates who you believe should be put to death anyway. In reality this is a rare occurrence among death row inmates. In modern prison management systems the risk is minimized greatly.

If the death penalty is completely abolished, then what? All lifers in their own GenPop?

Figured that. Is it normal ask the families about it?
Yes, or at least to tell them you’re planning to seek it.

They might have strong reasons they don’t want you to do that, including reasons that have nothing against the morality of the death penalty. Some families are traumatized and don’t want a lengthy court proceeding, which is what any death penalty case is going to turn into in USA.
