because vacation time is almost here again and vacation ideas are always good!
Besides the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, there is the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis (
www.cbsfa.org); the Cross of the Martyrs which honors 21 Franciscans killed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; San Miguel Mission Church, the oldest church in the U.S. which is next door to the “oldest house in the U.S.”; the Santuario de Guadalupe, the oldest shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in the U.S… Then there is the Santuario de Chimayo (
www.holychimayo.us), north of Santa Fe, which is a shrine and a place of many healings. Get some REAL New Mexico red chile and have lunch at Leona’s right next to the chapel! If you can, attend Mass at the Carmelite monastery on Mt. Carmel Road (it’s up near Museum Hill) at 7:00 a.m.
While you’re there, visit El Rancho de las Golondrinas (
www.golondrinas.org), a living-history museum that highlights the Spanish Colonial period (if you have a daughter into the “American Girls”, this is where Josefina might have lived!)
In Tucson, AZ, visit the San Xavier del Bac Mission, also known as the White Dove of the Desert.
