Famous large families?

The Gilbreths (of “Cheaper by the Dozen”) were mentioned on the first page, but I think their mom deserves her own post. 🙂 Lillian Gilbreth and her husband Frank are considered the mother and father of industrial engineering. Lillian was well educated - she had a master’s before she married Frank and earned her Ph.D. while raising her children. She was a professor and wrote many books - she would use the time on bed rest before and after giving birth to work on her writing. Not too many people (besides engineers) know about her achievements - they just know she is the mom in “Cheaper by the Dozen.”
 
And when Frank died suddenly, she kept all his appointments and engagements including a European conference. She found a way to teach efficiency in her home. She found ways to utilize efficiency through her children.

Although it would be frowned upon today, she left her younger children in the care of her 3 eldest daughters while she went to Europe to finish Frank’s work. She allowed her kids to sell packs of cigarettes to her students, from which they’d already snatched the coupon. :eek: They would use the coupons to buy things for the house and gifts.

Dolly Parton came from a family of 10 or 12 children… ( I forgot)
