Is it a sin to deliberately engage in fantasy thoughts while having marital relations? I struggle with this and it seems that relations are almost an “occasion of sin”. But of course, avoiding relations is not good for a marriage either. I have been married for 16 years.

If you’re feeling guilty about something you should talk to your priest, especially if guilt issues are interfering with your sex life. Just remember that sex within marriage is a wonderful gift from God! 🙂

not sinful if fantasy only involve you and your spouse.
example: you fantasize the act occurs elsewhere between you and your spouse.
very difficult to tell if fantasy involves fantasy persons (from cartoon, pc game or pure imagination etc) probably sinful.
example:(suppose you’re male) fantasize relation with Lora in the game “tomb raider”.
surely sinful if fantasy involves marital relation with real life persons other than your spouse.

I’d really like to curse that unexpected frown smiley.
but I won’t:D

The obvious bigger question is: Why am I choosing to engage my thoughts in fantasy when I have the real thing in front of me? …and: What am I doing about it? (whether it is spousal or other person fantasy).

Yours is a very interesting question.

Could it be because man by nature is not monogamous? that most eventually tire of the same partner? that the grass on the other side always looks greener? that variety is the spice of life? Or is that you just watch TV? All those lewd provocative images. . . .
…and: What am I doing about it? (whether it is spousal or other person fantasy).
One solution might be to silently repeat the mantra: “Get behind me, Satan!” while concentrating on the job in hand.

I’ve struggled with this and found that, as odd as it sounds, it helps to PRAY (yes, while doing “it”). I internally (not outloud! lol) ask God to make our lovemaking a sign of the Sacrament our marriage is and the images pass away quickly. I have found our lovemaking to be SO much better since doing this. I am much more focused on my husband and feel like more of a participant whereas before I felt like more of a passive observer (I know, sounds wierd). Incidently, the images I saw generally were of me with my husband, just in different circumstances (as the above poster said), but it was still unfulfilling. Hope this helps!

God bless, Jen

Unfortunately, the reason this is happening is years of masturbation before I reverted back to being a practicing Catholic. It just shows you the damage pornography and masturbation can do. It is not compatable with healthy sexuality. I am a female.

I believe that Jesus said that if you lusted in your heart for a woman, you already had committed a sin…thus, the fantasy should not be about other people. I like the idea of the woman that said this is a sacramental act…if you have that in the forefront of your mind, God will honor that and make the “act” with your mate exciting

So many of these replies seem to be based on pure ignorance of long term married life.

My husband and I are both almost 60 years old and have been having relations for almost 40 years.

Believe me when I say that praying through sex is not going to be the answer to this question.

Being with the “real thing” hasn’t been much of a turn on since our early 20’s.

That’s around 35 years now of being with the “real thing.”

Peoples’ bodies decay. They get fat. They get pregnant, multiple times. They get wrinkled and saggy. They get blotchy, puffy, soft, scarred, stretch marked, pock marked. They lose teeth, they lose hair, they gain stink. Fat and stink are the only gains. Must I go on???

And, sex with the same partner over and over simply becomes boring over time, unless something changes. **The easiest thing to change is your mind. **

Most people’s personal appearance is not much of a turn on even when they are young and in their best possible physical condition, let alone when they’ve gone through a lifetime of hard use.

Fantasizing about sex with a 40, 50, 60, 70 year old is positively a turn off for almost all people, except the weird perhaps.

And, that’s the way we are wired. Obviously, the people who are most desirable are the people who are most capable of healthy reproduction
(age-wise). Most people don’t find people over 50 desirable because people over 50 are not suitable partners for reproductive purposes.

After all, sex is really about reporduction, isn’t it?

So what can you do? Do you simply stop having sex because you no longer find your partner all that desirable? Is imagining yourself with the same partner floating on a gondola in Venice, or dressed in a loin cloth in some exotic setting going to be a turn on? Give me a break.

I believe that you have to make a choice. You are either going to decide to give up sex and remain “chaste,” with your spouses consent that is, or at some point you are going to have to indulge a vivid imagination in order to bring the marital act to a fulfilling conclusion.

I kind of do not believe that these fantasies are sinful, although I do worry about it. But, I have stopped confessing them. I had one priest who sort of equivocated. I had one who said they were okay. I read a book by a priest that said they were okay. All of this in the context of the marital sex act only, of course, not random sexual fantasizing.

I have been successful at fantasizing about imaginary couples. I’m not comfortable fantasizing about real people. Sometimes it gets sort of kinky, sometimes the situation is inappropriate. I have come to realize that often the fantasy is related to how I am feeling emotionally at the time.

For instance, I’m speaking generally now, and not about myself, if you fantasize about S & M, maybe you are feeling very weak and impotent and the fantasy allows you to feel more powerful and in control, or vice versa. If you fansasize about rape, maybe you are feeling guilty and you would like to imagine a situation where you have no reponsibility or control. If you fantasize about multiple partners, or voyerism, or being a professional of some sort, maybe you are feeling a lack of attention or desirability. You get the idea.

Paying attention to your fantasies, which often come spontaneously, can give you insight into your psyche.

Anyway, I would confess it and see what the priest says if you are worried. Take whatever anyone says here with a grain of salt, obviously. You are probably going to have to work this one out between yourself and God though. Try praying about it and then ask a priest. You might not believe the priest anyway. Seems to be an area of ignorance for even those who should have the answers.

Not to be insensitive, but I think you hit the nail on the head. And this is a problem that most people have with their sexuality. Most have spent years and years with addictions to perversions that simply modulate what they must do to be satisfied. Having various sexual partners, masturbation, pornography, etc. tend to make the other person in the act into a utility simply for sexual gratification. So if these activities begin in the teen years, by the time the person is thirty, they are so sexually jaded that they have to do dangerous or disgusting things to their spouse simply to become aroused.

It’s the older people I worry about the most. As SaintGobban pointed out, the older you get, the less spry you are. That presents some real difficulties. I’ll say this first: a 60 year old and a 20 year old are simply not going to have the same sexual experiences. It’s physically impossible. Unfortunately, it does become difficult to achieve real satisfaction in one’s later years. If, however, a person has, as I said, become sexually jaded while in their prime, they are even more likely to do outlandish or perverse things as they get older.

I know that this doesn’t give you the solution to your problems, but I hope it puts it in perspective a bit.

St. Maria Goretti, pray for us!

Did you even read a word of what I said above? Did you actually read the original question and follow the discussion here?

No one is talking about **DOING **outlandish or perverse things.

No one.

The topic at hand is not the evils of masturbation and viewing pornography.

No one is disputing the sinful nature of those two** ACTS**, and the potential that pornography has to lead to far more serious sins.

But, the topic here is sexual **FANTASIES ** in the context of the MARITAL ACT.

That is an entirely different topic than the one you seem to be addressing.

And believe me, sex is really not all that different at 60 than it is at 20.
The sex act, the response, the feelings are the same. Even the duration is the same. The only difference is the ability to reproduce and the intensity of the desire.

The problem is not age per se, if one is healthy. The problem is the same at 28 as at 58. The problem is that over time your partner and yourself, objectively, become less and less desirable, and that fact coupled with the lack of novelty in the situation, hampers one’s ability to become aroused, if one does not create a more exciting experience through fantasy.

I don’t know how to summarize the problem more clearly than that.
Again, masturbation and pornography are really not the issue here.
Masturbation and viewing pornography are ACTS.
Fantasy is a THOUGHT.

Masturbation and viewing pornography are private sins.

Fantasizing while having sex with your SPOUSE, is not an act. It is a THOUGHT, while engaging in the marital act; an act which is fully approved of, even required within the bonds of marriage.

This does not mean that I heartily endorse it, obviously.

I just wish someone with some credibility ie. credentials, could address the actual issue with an explanation of their recommendations that makes sense.

I think this is generalizing. I’m well over the half century mark and I find many people my age (give and take some years) very attractive. In fact, I’d say more so then people much younger of whom I’d have nothing in common.

Not the issue and not the topic.

Obviously most 16 year olds are not going to be attracted to 50 year olds and vice versa.

Your personal proclivities are not the topic.

Okay, here’s a hypothetical. The “real thing” in front of you is just lying there thinking of England (a la Queen Victoria), and you would like to be seeing some indication that what you’re doing might actually be fun for her.

maybe this is God’s way of telling you to stop.

I prefer to think that this is God’s way of reminding you that you are going to die.

But, you could be right, however many of them occur long before one’s interest in sex, or reproductive years, are over.
