Fast and loose with the TLM in San Francisco?

The current bishop continues to disappoint many.

It was announced in the diocesan paper an extraordinary form of the Mass will be offered in the chapel of St. Vincent’s Boys’ School in Marin.

Oh, BTW, it was also announced the TLM in Petaluma north of this location 10 miles will be discontinued. Those folks will now have to go to the more out of the way St. Vincent’s location.

Net gain for the TLM in the Bay Area - nada. Yet the leader line to the article would want one to believe otherwise.

Forget that St. Vincent’s is more out of the way for the North Bay than was the Petaluma location.

The North Bay? This is where the archbishop will tow the line and conform?

Come on. The Bay Areas has 7.5 million folks. SF& peninsula 2.5million. East Bay 2 million, North Bay (Marin, Sonoma and Napa)600,000 thousand. And then San Jose/Santal Clara 2.5 million.

Not to mention that it costs 5 bucks to cross the GGB and on summer weekends the backup can be an hour.

So basically the extraordinary form is being technically granted in the most remote and difficult to get to location in the Bay Area? 'Well Benedict appointed this bishop so I guess its all OK.

Just to clarify, you’re talking about 2 different bishops here. Petaluma is in the Santa Rosa diocese and Marin is under the San Francisco diocese. I hadn’t heard that there would no longer be a Mass at St. Mary’s Chapel in Petaluma. I’ll have to look into that one.

BTW, I’m not sure why you would think that St. Vincent’s was more out of the way. If people went up to Petaluma from SF (which is why you would have to cross the Golden Gate) then Marin would be far closer. Besides that,most people who live in SF and below actually just come over to Oakland via the Bay Bridge. Most don’t go all of the way up to Santa Rosa. Oakland would still probably be easier than St. Vincents. I imagine that one of the reasons St. Vincent’s was chosen is because it would be less of a scheduling problem. It still would be nice to get one right in the City.

Bear’s right. Petaluma’s in the Santa Rosa diocese.

And St. Vincent’s is comparatively easy to get to from the Petaluma area (I used to live in Napa, so I’ve driven that area quite a bit.) Plus, it’s absolutely gorgeous inside (a friend of mine was married there.)

It’s the folks in SF proper that I’d be more likely to sympathize with as they have to cross a bridge to attend a TLM no matter what. (Although going to Oakland from SF is “counter-commute” even on the weekends.)

I hear there’s a TLM in Rutherford, though only once a month and Rutherford is genuinely hard to get to from anywhere…

Why not offer it in the main church?. Isn’t it holy enough for the main church. What a joke!!.

Thanks. It looks like Fr. Young is the priest doing the Mass in Petaluma. Maybe he doesn’t feel like he can field both places. Also, the one in Petaluma is not done in a church. He might feel that it is more suitable in a church since it’s being offered. Anyways, we’re still talking about two different dioceses. At least the SF diocese has made a start. Hopefully the Santa Rosa diocese can find a priest for their diocese.

BTW, I think the chapel is the main church and it is quite pretty.
