Ok this is a silly question, but…

I like to follow the old rule of fasting from midnight on Saturday before a Sunday mass, but sometimes I can’t make it to the morning masses and end up at a 5pm mass. I’m curious how others might handle the urge to fast, but not fast for 24 hours. Do you just follow the ‘one hour’ rule?

Most people who want to follow the very old rule of fasting from midnight to reception of Eucharist get up EARLY on Sunday morning.

If it will help you, there was a rule in between the midnight on and the one hour before receiving Communion: It was a THREE HOUR fast. Why don’t you see if that fits the bill for you? Or however long you think you can do it without food before the evening Mass? After all, this is a private devotion of yours, not something that is mandatory.

Needless to say, have those beans and franks ready to go on Saturday evenings for after Mass…😉

Thanks! I didn’t know about the three hour fast, but I’ll try that next time. Normally I do wake up early on Sunday, unless I’m on the night schedule like this week, in which case I wake up around 1pm. Too late to make it to morning mass, but also too early before the late mass and I end up getting reeaaaly dizzy. 😦

The three-hour fast was in effect from 1953 until 1966, and was adopted because of permission being given for afternoon and evening Masses to be celebrated. It is the rule that I still follow, as I feel that one hour is inadequate.
