Are the Fridays of lent days of fasting and abstinence or just abstinence?
thus, the Fridays of Lent are days of fasting and abstinence. In other instances the law of abstinence alone binds the faithful; thus ordinary Fridays are simply days of abstinence. The purpose of this article is to trace the history of ecclesiastical legislation regarding the law of abstinence, as well as to examine the motives which underlie this legislation.

Is this right? I thought only abstinence was required.

The newadvent.org site is a great site to research things, especially history and explanations of what terms mean-- but you must keep in mind that it was written in the early 1900s, around 1917, and Canon Law has been revised since then in many areas regarding fasting, abstinence, holy days, etc. The liturgical calendar and missal have been revised as well.

So, keep this in mind when reading their articles.

The current requirements can be found on the USCCB website.
