When should that start? One hs the mass start or one hs before the communion?
If I didn’t fast properly and go to take a communion, is that a mortal sin?:confused:confused:confused:

My personal rule (not sure if its the church one) is 1 hour before the start of Mass not from when I anticipate taking Communion as I attend OF Masses as sometimes they can be long or short depending on the length of the homily, any special things going like baptisms etc.

Strictly speaking, the requirement is one hour before communion:

Can. 919 §1. A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.

vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/__P39.HTM

Of course, if for practical or voluntary spiritual reasons you choose to observe a longer fast that is fine.

Yes, like Aelred Minor said too, it’s one hour before receving the Holy Communion.

I actually went to a little feast at church a couple of days after I became Catholic this Easter and Fr. Michal was just sitting there next to me passing on all these different kinds of delicious meals, it was rather funny although I did feel a little bad for him, but he had a Mass to go to so he was fasting hours and hours before receiving the Eucharist. 🙂

One hour before communion is the standard for all healthy adults.

Diabetetics and the like do not have to observe this fast.

One hour before communion is correct but I have always fasted one hour before start of Mass.

If you didn’t deliberately go to receive Holy Communion knowing you had broken your fast then you didn’t sin, in my opinion.

One hour, as commonly stated and taught. However, I have fasted for entire mornings before Mass - which was more common in earlier times (I believe), but not a requirement today. And yes, people with particular health issues (eg: diabetes) needn’t observe any of this.

it starts an hour before one receives communion. unless you live next door to Church just the time taken to get there, plus the usual Sunday Mass is 40-50 minutes until communion time, there is seldom a problem.

mortal sin requireds grave matter–worthy reception of communion is grave matter
full knowledge—now you know
full free will intention and consent.

if Mass runs short, if you had a blood sugar episode and needed to drink OJ, if you had to use a cough drop to stop hacking, if you needed to take Rx at a certain time, none of these situations mean you had a malicious will and consent to receive unworthily, so no sin.

for instance you stopped for breakfast because you have to take your meds with a meal, or you are very hungry and feel you can’t last until after Mass. You expect to finish the meal well in time but service is slow, Mass runs fast, and you realize as you leave church that you fast was only actually 50 minutes. no harm no foul you had no intention to break the fast that way.

that is why those of us raised with a 3 hour fast or fasting from midnight still prefer the early Mass.

Doing the fast of nothing after midnight til Sunday morning Mass begins would be harmful to my health. 3 hours is the most I can do without any ill effects. I can easily do the hour fast without issues unless I have the need sometimes to take medication that requires food to be taken with it.

The direction says:" One Hours before taking Communion."

The most common understanding is 1 hour before Mas is scheduled to began.

Age and medications lesson this obligation.

The ONLY way it would be a Mortal sin is IF One intended to OFFEND GOD in this action. Accisental or forgetfulness; NO!

God Bless,
Pat

then is it not fortunate this is no longer the discipline, one hour should be manageable by everyone except one with uncontrolled diabetes, but ask your doctor if you have health issues. medicine does not break the fast.

most common understanding is exactly what it says, one hour before receiving communion, not before Mass begins. in practice this means most of us fast for an hour before receiving communion without even thinking about it

From the time I had my First Holy Communion at age 8, my mother made sure I did not eat or drink anything 1 hour before the start of Mass not based on the time when actually we went up for Communion.

I remember doing nearly 4 hours of a fast on Easter Vigil due to the length of the Mass when I was a sponsor/Godparent for my sister’s kids. That was a bit hard but I managed, and good thing there was a reception after for the newly received and their families/friends/sponsors.

It’s one hour, but I read it’s also good to keep the traditional fast of 3 hours or from midnight
