I am a type 1 diabetic. Do I still have to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?

Elderly or people with health concerns can just follow their own prudential judgment for how much they want to fast, or not fast at all.

Peace.

Not if it is a danger to your health. The sick and the elderly are excused and have the opportunity to do some other kind of penance. They might choose to eat fish or veggie food instead of meat like the rest of us but eat three meals instead of one. Or they could choose to pray an extra rosary or something like it.

Start with asking your doctor (one main meal, with tow other meals that equal one other meal), and if they advise against it, then speak with your pastor.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that fasting for Catholics doesn’t mean skipping all food that day but rather cutting back. The standard is one regular meal and up to two smaller meals. With that said…

Don’t do anything to endanger your health. It’s true, however, that many of us can cut back a bit on our meals without danger. If you do cut back, test your blood sugar more frequently and deal with any highs of lows as appropriate. It might be wise to consult with your doctor if you have concerns.
