talked to my older brother, who took me to my first Easter Vigil in the Detroit cathedral when in the late 1950s and he recalls, as previous poster states, it started after dark, but rather late, so that communion was received shortly after midnight. We also attended Eastern Rite Easter liturgies in our town with my brother’s godparents, which began at midnight and lasted until dawn.
Right. My wife was a choir director in New England. The mass started about 11 and was timed so the Gloria came just after midnight. Since there were no Baptisms etc, it went pretty quickly from there.

Is a Vicar General the same as a Monsignor?
No. There can only be one Vicar General in a Diocese at any given time, but there can be as many Monsignors as the Pope designates.

A Monsignor is a regular priest who has somehow come to the favourable attention of the Pope, by doing some kind of outstanding service to the Church.

The Vicar General of your Diocese is the priest who takes over from the Bishop temporarily whenever he is out of town, or if he becomes too ill to perform his duties, but not too ill to retire.
