I made a commitment at the beginning of the year to fast every friday. But today, I’m feeling very sick. Does anyone know if it is still a good idea to fast?

One is not required to fast when ill. If you have been fasting ‘successfully’ but today you are not feeling well, perhaps it’s time for a Friday off. If you are well enough, why not offer some other penance instead? Perphaps pray a rosary for the intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, since this is a First Friday.

I agree with Mercy, offer up something else. I think that many times we do not give God enough credit, we think that if we fail to do something that we have been doing (fasting, praying the rosary daily, etc.) that He will be upset with us. Never forget that we have a God that is full of love for us and wants nothing but the absolute best for each of us.

I know that God understands. And that He will take your intention of fasting as prayer and part of your committment. He wants the best for you. Get well soon.

classic spiritual direction advises against fasting or other pentitential practice if it is contrary to your health. For instance a diabetic or pregnant woman, or someone on certain medications, must follow their doctor’s advice and what and when to eat. In fact, adhering to a medical diet can be a penance in itself if the sacrifices entailed are offered up in the same spirit as other penances. You can also substitute a fast from something else–TV, frivolous shopping, vulgar language, gambling, perhaps anything that presents a temptation to you. In any case a private promise is not a sacred vow and there is no sin involved in breaking it because there is no obligation.

Thanks for the help! 👍
I think I’ll take your advise and offer up something else.
