My wife is 7 months pregnant and was wondering about if she has to fast or if it is okay for her to not abstain from meat on Fridays. I would want her not to get sick or anything, but she is really commited to the Lenten season. Should she continue with her fasting/abstaining or should she just forget about it for the last months of her pregnancy?

Any thoughts would be helpful.😃

It my understanding that the fasting rules are for normal, healthy adults. Legitimate health reasons are valid for limiting or eliminating the requirement. For example, a diabetic who needed a regular intake of food would not be limited to two meal a day, but may still be expected to reduce total consumption unless this would also be detrimental.

“Has to” is the question? Medical necessities normally release you from the requirement, however, are there alternatives available? Is there a reason she can’t receive her nourishment from fish? Just curious, fast and abstinence are personal in nature, as well as communal. In fact the USCCB has allowed us, in the United States, to replace the practice of Abstinence ever Friday of the year with a personal penance. I would imagine a similar practice would be appropriate. Check the USCCB web site.
If she is really committed to the Lenten season maybe she would rather the rosary to abstinence.
Try grilling her a Tuna steak!

Your wife should follow her doctor’s orders about whether or not to fast. She is not bound by the fast if she is under a doctor’s care and he says not to fast or directs her to eat between meals.

Abstinence from meat on Friday should be followed unless she has doctor’s orders. I can’t think of a reason that your wife would be exempt from abstinence because of her pregnancy. She can eat fish or vegetarian those days. Again, her doctor has the final say.

All of you guys responses are very helpful. The fish on Fridays is not a problem for her. She loves salmon and so do I. Thanks again and God Bless you all.
