I got a question for you guys, do you fast? How long? I been wanting to fast, not sure how to attempt this.

The general rule that I follow is that you eat two small meals and one bigger meal that is not larger than the two small meals together. And no snacking between. My father will not eat all day and only consume broth.

I try to have nothing but water on Good Friday. It’s pretty difficult. On days that I fast, I’ll usually skip a meal. The general rule is two snacks and one meal, but that is only required on fast days. On any day that you want to fast, I believe you can do it however you want, as long as it is done in the spirit of sacrifice.

Fridays.

Wake up at 4.30am for work.

Only brown bread and tap water.

Fast ends at 3pm but continue abstaining from goodies until midnight.

I can’t do a full day fast as I usually find it harder to eat bread than not eat.

Also, as I drink a giant tea every morning before work but don’t on Friday I end up with headaches due to lack of caffeine or sugar.

I ran out of bread for this Friday so took cornflakes with me instead, dry and soft.

Well, first, I would advise that you talk to your spiritual director so that you do exactly what the Lord is inviting you to do with your fast! What a good desire in your heart to have!

After talking with my priest, I have done “mini-fasts” while taking intense times of prayer–this would include having a bowl of cereal in the morning, a cup of soup for lunch, and a piece of bread for dinner. No snacking in between. It’s good because I can rationalize that I am eating three meals, but I am definitely not eating anything substantial.

Again, like I said everyone is invited to different methods of fasting though. I would really recommend talking to a priest or spiritual director and expressing your desires.

I think this is something that you should discuss with your spiritual father to make sure that you are not taking on more than you can handle and that you are fasting not only from food but from all the other passions as well (earlier someone mentioned the importance of prayer…).

In any case, my two cents is: make sure you establish a regular fasting rule so it doesn’t become something you do because you “feel like it” or something like that. Have a rule that you keep by habit/discipline, regardless of how intense or frequent your fasting days are.

Peace 🙂

Wow thanks guys for encouragement! I feel like its something the spirit wants me to do. I notice some of you guys mention prayer during fast?

I follow the traditional practice of the Church, one meal a day, plus one or two smaller meals to keep up strength (and now necessary since I am a diabetic). Since following the strict diabetic diet is a fast in and of itself, I try to use prayer and meditation to make it of spiritual benefit.
