I would like some advice, please. I have decided to fast and pray once a week on Thursdays for an end to legal abortion. My question is how do I handle dinner/lunch invitations without letting them know that I am fasting? Should I accept and fast on Friday of that week instead? Should I refuse and leave them wondering?

I would really appreciate help with this.
Thank you,

Fasting does not have to necessarily be food. It can be from television, radio/CD’s, computer games, internet, gossiping, being impatient, etc. There are numerous things you can fast from that does not necessarily involve food.

I often fast on Fridays, I usually just tell them no without explanation.

On that note:

Two years and they still ask me if I want to go to Hardee’s on Friday, DUDE I’M CATHOLIC QUIT ASKING!

Doesn’t Hardee’s have fish sandwiches? I practice abstinence from meat all year round (in addition to other fasting/abstinence), that’s what I do…

Salad? French fries?

Well, it’s only one meal out of your day - skip that same meal the day before or after.

My sincere, deepest appologies. I did not mean to offend. Or ignore.

When I have set up fasting days and I get an invite I just don’t fast that day. That way it stays uncomplicated and makes it more do-able.

I am a bit confused. I thought fasting was a committment to just one meal a day. Cannot that invitation be that one meal allowed? Or have I been doing it wrong? If it is just one meal a day, I would like to make all saturdays a perpetual fast day dedicated to Mother Mary?

during Lent the Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fasts require one *moderate *meal and two small snacks that together are less than or equal to your main meal.

Pretty hard to starve yourself all day, go out and restrain your eating.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I forgot to mention the two small snacks (I think they are called collations or something like that). I understand your problem. I don’t get invited out, so fasting every saturday is an option for me. Same for fasting all 40 days of Lent. I should be able to do that as well. Thank you for the information

Ragga, if you get a dinner/lunch invitation at least a day in advance, then just switch to the traditional fast for that day (ie, don’t eat between midnight and noon). Almost any lunch you get invited to won’t be before noon. If they tell you on the day, then I guess go with what Trelow said and politely decline it.

In the Confraternity of Penitents, we fast (and abstain from meat) on Wednesdays and Fridays. Our Rule states that charity supersedes our rule of fasting. If charity or the requirements of your job demand that you join others for a meal, then join them and don’t make a big deal out of it.

If charity or the requirements of your job do not require your joining others for a meal, then simply tender your regrets, possibly qualifying them by saying that you have made other arrangements for that time (which you HAVE!).

I imagine some people would secretly think “yay, I get to eat steak” or whatever but for other not fasting, when they want/intend to, would be penetential in it’s own way

:o Really?

I try to feel like that but more often I just enjoy the dispensation. With fasting on Wednesdays & Fridays and abstaining from meat M, W, F, Sat, whenever a Solemnity is scheduled to fall on a day of fast or abstinence, a CFP meeting can turn into anticipatory revelry. 😃 😃

And why not? I considered continuing my thought to say it’s possible for there to be pride connected to it feeling penitential or something even worse for someone dealing with scrupulosity.

I don’t fast, because I fasted once for God and it turned into an almost fatal eating disorder. Instead of fasting, I am going to help out the hungry in the world this year. 🙂
