SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

The first episode that introduced us to Flambeau did show him as much more brutal than GKC’s character. The writers have since mellowed him quite a bit, which I think is all to the good.

As to physical description, that’s not all that important to me. As long as the writers and the actor capture the essence of the character, I’m fine with changing such details. I like the actor who plays Flambeau. I think he’s handsome. 😃 And he captures Flambeau’s conflicted nature–a scamp with something of a heart who is battling inner demons.

I saw a turning point in his character when he pushed his daughter away to keep her from entering a life of crime. There’s hope for Flambeau–as for most people who come into Fr.B’s influence.

That could be the one, but I am not positive. I think it was though.
 
I am not enjoying Season 5 with no Sid. I don’t care for Bunty Windermere very much.
Father Brown appears to have put on weight. The storylines and characters very
boring.

I’m not to season 5 yet. We just finished 4. I could see how it might get a bit stale by season 5. I find shows often reach their peak in season 3. I really hope Fr. Brown isn’t like that and can provide years of good entertainment. But that would be a rare exception. My wife will be so sad there is no Sid and I’ll miss him too.

there was one episode with witchcraft and Father Brown seemed to see nothing wrong with their beliefs. Father Brown appears to be an opened minded priest.
it does seem a bit stale.

The season 4 finale with the voodoo priest? If so I think you could take it that way. But you could also take it as he was interested in understanding it. Although it appeared he let them perform a voodoo ritual in the rectory which would be a serious problem. There are problematic things like that from time to time but overall it does a pretty good job of being fair and true to the Faith. It is much better than I would expect from modern TV.

No this episode was witchcraft, not the voodoo priest. Although in the episode you mention I was a little troubled he made the sign of the cross as the woman began praying in front of her voodoo altar.

I think he saw plenty wrong with it; he just didn’t openly condemn them. He looks at them as misguided people who can be saved. He’s very subtle.

He made the sign of the cross for HIS belief, not hers. How can the sign of the cross be wrong?
 
The stories are new stories (written today by writers) based on the character Chesterton created, not on any stories he actually wrote.

My wife was troubled too. But I took it as him affirming his faith against hers. But as I said that he let them do this in the rectory is what bothered me. Understanding is one thing but allowing it in your domain another.

I agree. That was the whole point of the original stories and they’ve done that amazingly well given our modern culture.
 
I think it stays true to the character and tone. Very true. That’s why I like it.

Lady Felicia too, and now Bunty. Of course, it was the societal expectation and fashion in the time period of the stories. And the costume people got the hats right. Mrs. M’s are the kind a woman of her background and station in life would wear–those of Lady F and Bunty, too. I watched a behind the scenes segment in which they discussed the costumes and why they dressed each character as they did. Very interesting, and telling that they do put that much effort into authenticity and character development. 🙂

And the brooches. I love brooches–I have a large collection of them from antique to modern to “spendy” to cheap. Lady F wore brooches with nearly every outfit. I love finding new ways to wear them, as often as possible, too. 🙂 Nothing dresses up a casual outfit like the right brooch. 😉

They are all something of a delight, I find, on all sorts of levels. I’ve always read a lot of crime fiction and enjoy all sorts but a cosy (like ‘Father Brown’ and our ‘Midsomer Murders’, which we particularly like because we live in the area) can often carry much more of a story/plot line than the more ‘cutting edge’ variety, especially on TV. Far less likely to be feeling “oh, just get on with it!”

The period fashions are fun but how did they have enough hours in the day and where did Mrs McCarthy find her milliner? Did Lady Felicia run her over to Oxford or Cheltenham on a regular basis on hat and clothes-buying binges?

There is something else, something that Mr Kaninchen pointed out one night when we were watching Rowan Atkinson being Maigret. Isn’t it funny that, in those days, all the cars were wonderfully maintained and polished to perfection? 🙂

I like Rowan Atkinson. He is so funny. Yes the cars all look they have just been handwashed and polished!

My college roommate’s Mother was British. Her mother’s father was a milliner in London in the 1930’s and 1940’s and 50’s.
