Hello,
I don’t know if I posted about this before, but apparently my dad is back in communication with a woman he knows in another state (it started like a couple of years ago). It’s a very long story, there’s so much I can’t explain, but I think he has a narcissitic complex. I don’t know how physical the relationship got when he was in the other state recently. Apparently that woman even went to my grandfather’s funeral and my dad presented her as “a friend of the family”, they have no shame.
But my question is not that, my mom at this point is ready to confront him, although there’s not much physical evidence. But, she recently found a receipt of a prepaid cell phone that he secretly bought. She just wants to calmly tell him to leave and that she does not want to live with his lies and that she knows what is going on.
They have never defaulted on a mortgage payment in the fifteen years they have had the home. They have about eight more years to pay off the home. However, it’s been many months since my dad has worked and my mom has never worked and English is not her first language. Basically the extra savings they had are gone. Right now my brother and I live here at the home and pay rent, but that is not really enough to pay the full motgage and bills. My mom wants a separation, but not a divorce.
Should my get a lawyer? I told her she needs a lawyer, that she does not know how my dad will react. She doesn’t want to lose the house and she thinks that if they sell the home that my dad will give her half. But my dad has collected many debts and I’m worried that he’ll hold her partially resposible. Also does my mom deserve half whatever they have or can she fight for more since he is cheating on her.
Also, my brothers and I are adults, I’m wondering if we should say anything to my dad (like “we know what’s going on”) or not say anything at all? I know he’ll know that we know, but I’m not sure if we should say it.
I don’t know how all this is going to play out. My mom wants to refinance for more years and see if she can get the mortgage payment lowered, but I feel it’s a waste since there’s only eight more years left. Then again, I doubt he’ll transfer ownership to my mom.
I’m just looking for some advice from anyone who has gone through this so we can handle this as civil as possible. I know my dad will deny everything. I’m going to school and only have time for a part-time job.
