Its nice to have a positive news story. Thanks Califman 🙂

Now… it almost makes me wish to be back in LA so I could buy some of that salsa and chips. I hope the sales are phenomenal!

Fr. Boyle is truly inspiring. He is the sort of person I only wish I could have been. He has such a tremendous connection to people, even those who are considered to be beyond help.

Here is a little background, for those not aware of him:
Founded in 1992, Homeboy Industries provides at-risk youth and former gang members with counseling, tutoring, mental health care, tattoo removal and employment. Its motto: “Nothing stops a bullet like a job.”

Through the creation of several small businesses, hard-to-place individuals have a chance to thrive in a safe, supportive environment where they can learn both job skills, Boyle said. To date, Homeboy Industries has rehabilitated about 12,000 gang members.

The businesses include Homeboy Bakery, Homegirl Caf & Catering, Homeboy Merchandise and Homeboy Silkscreen and Embroidery. Pending ventures include a branch of Homegirl Cafe at LAX and a Homeboy Market at City Hall.

The tattoo removal, as I recall from earlier news stories, is vital. The tats identify an individual as belonging to a particular gang.
 
Yes, the good father has done a great service for the people of East Los Angeles and I wish there was a ralph’s in my area. Hopefully the line will be picked up by other california markets such as safeway. Here is a link to Homeboy industries website.

There is also a book on his life called “father G and the homies” or something to that effect, it has been a couple of years since I read it.
 
Also a book called Tattoos on the Heart. Very inspirational, and it gives perspective on one’s walk with God. You might look at one of the gang members and think they are bound for hell, not knowing that they have made a lot of progress. Might give you more patience and a new perspective on the death penalty.
 
This guy came to speak at my high school a while back, as part of a series of speakers to show us students all the neat things Jesuits are doing. He was a very interesting and inspirational speaker. I’m glad his project is doing well, and getting some good publicity.
 
Now that is the spirit of Catholic entrepreneurship! What a great cause!
