This subject was a major influence in me returning to the church. Because I had an very very distorted version of the faith because of this priest that now had his own version of the catholic church

As a child this is one of the “parishes” my parents brought me and my sister. It is where I did my eagle scout project and learned a distorted version of the faith.

Was this church an anomaly or is it common. Sadly growing up in the late 1980’s and early 90’s I thought this was the Roman catholic church. Did others have similar experiences

I don’t see too many independent parishes, and the ones that I do normally see are sedevacantist or just independent traditional. I don’t think I’ve seen an independent parish on the other side of the spectrum.

These kinds of parishes can be very damaging. My father was raised in the Philippine Independent Church and that experience, unfortunately, soured him to the real Catholic Church. When I first converted, he was not at all happy with my decision. But over the past few years, he has calmed down a bit.
